Who We Are
Wikimedia Australia, Inc.® is an independent, not-for-profit organisation, whose primary aim is to promote equality of opportunity to access and participate in the collaborative creation of Free Cultural Works, especially educational works, and works about Australia, its culture, natural environment, and Australian news and media. See our Statement of Purpose & Rules.
Wikimedia Australia is recognised by the Wikimedia Foundation as an official chapter and as such will offer members an official voice in the global Wikimedia community, whose aim is to create the sum of all human knowledge, freely available in your own language.
The purpose of Wikimedia Australia is to:
- organise and participate in educational and social events that promote development of Free Cultural Works and related open source software systems, in particular wikis
- increase public awareness, support and participation in the projects hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF)
- develop resources to assist Australians in the creation and maintenance of Free Cultural Works

What we do
The Wikimedia Foundation, Wikimedia Australia's parent organisation, is a not-for-profit organisation which hosts and supports a range of projects that contain information about Australia and Australians. Some of these projects include: Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Wikisource, Wikibooks and Wikinews, as well as projects in 266 languages. Wikimedia Australia shares and supports the Wikimedia Foundation's goals but does not manage these projects and is not responsible for their content. Volunteers editing from all over the world contribute the material hosted on the Wikimedia projects and we encourage our members and supporters to have a look and consider joining Wikimedia's mission to support the production of free content.

Planned Events
- Wikipedia will turn 10 years old in January 2011 - send your ideas for celebrations to us now!
- Wiki Wednesdays in Sydney - a regular bi-monthly meet for those interested in all things wiki.
Wikimedia Australia would love you to get involved! All members are encouraged to get involved in many ways.
You may be an active participant on one of the Wikimedia projects, or maybe you'd like to know more about how to get involved in one - whatever your background and experience, we'd love to tell you more about Wikimedia, and 'free culture' - please do sign up!

Featured Australian Content
Wikisource is an online library of free content publications, collected and maintained by the wikisource community. You can read more about what Wikisource includes and get help and information about getting started if you're interested in joining the effort. Feel free to ask questions on the community discussion page, and to experiment in the sandbox.
July 2010's 'featured text' has a distinctly Australian flavour;
"The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke" by C. J. Dennis.
A verse novel which tells the story of Bill, a larrikin of the Little Lonsdale Street push who meets the love of his life, Doreen. Their courtship and marriage sees his transition into a contented husband and father. It is written with a heavy Australian vernacular voice.
THE world 'as got me snouted jist a treat;
Crool Forchin's dirty left 'as smote me soul;
An' all them joys o' life I 'eld so sweet
Is up the pole.
Fer, as the poit sez, me 'eart 'as got
The pip wiv yearnin' fer—I dunno wot.
