Wikimedia Australia (WMAU) and the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) have made a [https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a2/WMF_WMAU-_Privacy_Amendment_%28Personal_Data_Protection%29_Bill_2026_submission-_Sept_2026.pdf?utm_source=commons.wikimedia.org&utm_campaign=index&utm_content=original joint submission] to the Australian Government’s consultation on the [https://consultations.ag.gov.au/rights-and-protections/privacy-reform/ proposed ''Privacy Amendment (Personal Data Protection) Bill 2026''.]

We support stronger privacy protections and meaningful control over personal information. At the same time, the submission highlights why the Wikimedia projects need to be considered differently from commercial, data-intensive online platforms.

Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects operate differently from commercial platforms. They are built and maintained by volunteers and serve the public interest. The Wikimedia Foundation collects very little personal information, does not track people across the internet, sell personal data or serve behavioural advertising. Wikimedia projects use transparent, community-led processes to create and maintain content.

The submission therefore requests the Government ensure that privacy reform does not have unintended consequences for the open knowledge ecosystem. Among other things, it recommends:

* an explicit exemption for non-profit, public-interest and community-governed knowledge and educational platforms,
* appropriate exceptions to the proposed right to erasure, protecting access to reliable information and the integrity of collaborative knowledge,
* recognition of the technical realities of distributed, mirrored, archived and openly licensed information,
* privacy protections that preserve pseudonymous participation without requiring platforms to collect additional personal information.

These issues are particularly relevant to our Wikimedia community. Revision histories, contribution records and other records of collaborative editing help volunteers identify sources, correct errors, investigate abuse and maintain the reliability of Wikimedia projects.

Our aim is to ensure that privacy reform protects people while preserving the open, collaborative and community-led nature of the Wikimedia projects.

2025–26 has been another busy and productive year for Wikimedia Australia. We’ve continued to grow our impact through our programs, partnerships and advocacy, but most importantly, through our community.

Photos in the slide show Wiki workshops, one delivered by Mike Dickison from Aotearoa New Zealand to some experienced Adelaide Wikimedians. As well as pictures from editathons at the Australian Society of Archivists conference, and the Underrepresented Scientists editathon at Uni of NSW.

We are particularly proud of expanding our online Drop-In sessions, including [[Drop in and Wikidata - August 2025|Wikidata]] [[Drop in and Wikidata - August 2025|drop-ins]], and strengthening our collaboration with Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand through shared conferences, [https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Event:1Lib1Ref_Australia_and_Aotearoa_New_Zealand 1Lib1Ref campaign] and the [[Announcing the Winners of the Wiki Science Competition 2025 for Australia and New Zealand|Wiki Science photo competition]]. Some local in-person editing groups have started meeting regularly in [[WikiCanberra Meetup - June 2026|Canberra]] and [[Introduction to Wikipedia: increasing awareness of South Australias unique environment|Adelaide]] that are steadily growing. This is in addition to the very active [[WikiClubWest]] over in Perth who are well established.

On the success of this, we’ve recently commenced the [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Event:Commons_Catch_Up_-_Australia/July_2026 Commons Catch-up] too. Please come along and enjoy these open sessions which are for anyone in our community.

Our Australian participation in the ESEAP Community Conference in Kaohsiung was an important opportunity to share experiences and build relationships. Alongside our collaboration with Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand, this work helps create a stronger, more connected Wikimedia movement.

These are just a few of our highlights. We are a relatively small organisation, but the impact of our work is much greater than our size might suggest. That is only possible because of the commitment of our volunteers, members, partners and supporters.

I want to give a huge thank our staff, Ali and Alice, for their enormous contribution over the past year. Their commitment, energy, joy and professionalism make such a difference.

I’d also like to sincerely thank Elliott and the Board for their support, guidance and insights, and everyone across our community who contributes their time, expertise and ideas, often behind the scenes.

			Pru Mitchell is a highly deserving winner for the 2026 Craig Franklin Award, as she makes a meaningful difference within the Wikimedia Community both in Australia and overseas. Within the Wikimedia Australia community, and more broadly, she is recognised as an exceptional Teacher-Librarian, trusted Wikimedian and dedicated mentor.

	~~== Who can you nominate? ==~~		Pru first joined Wikipedia in 2006 and joined WMAU at its incorporation in 2008, serving on the Board from 2013 to 2023, including as President (2017-20) and Treasurer (2020-23). Much of Pru’s focus is on outreach, and she has successfully established and maintained many organisational and individual relationships that continue to flourish today.

While the original project began in 2024, the ongoing collaboration and warmth fostered by Pru have not only maintained the project, but also helped expand its scope and members, with some later joining WMAU and participating in WikiCon 2026 from Pru’s encouragement.
