1Lib1Ref stands for one librarian, one reference. It's a campaign by librarians around the world (and anyone who has a passion for free knowledge) to add a missing references to articles on Wikipedia.

Wikipedia is one of the first stops for readers and researchers. It’s an especially important resource now, during COVID-19, when people are increasingly turning to the platform for trustworthy, unbiased, and up-to-date information. Join us to help improve the quality of content on Wikimedia platforms.

Wikimedia Australia supports librarians around Australia with training and running events around 1Lib1Ref. See some of our previous 1Lib1Ref programs on these pages:

Hold a #1Lib1Ref event at your library

1Lib1Ref at Newcastle University Library in May 2021

During #1Lib1Ref, librarians often hold an event to participate over morning tea!

To organise an event at your library, consider these steps:

  • Select a time between Sunday 15 May to Sunday 5 June 2022 to hold your event. We recommend an hour. Register your event with us and we will send you some laptop stickers for participants.
  • Make sure participants already have a Wikipedia account in advance of the event (otherwise you may not all be able to join at once on the day).
  • Develop a list of ideas of what participants may like to work on in advance. For example, one idea is to see that local libraries are represented on your local suburb, town's Wikipedia page. Be careful not to edit content about the institution you work for, as that could be considered a conflict of interest.
  • Make sure you have done some basic Wikipedia training yourself so that you can guide others. You can watch a brief video on how to add a citation here. You can download a brief editing guide to print and distribute here. You can also contact Wikimedia Australia to see if one of our facilitators are available to support your event.
  • Add all usernames of all participants to the project Dashboard here.
  • Make sure all editors are editing in the Visual Editor. Look for the Pencil icon in the top righthand corner of the editing window to switch to the Visual editors.
  • Encourage all participants to add their citations using the workflow outlined in the section above.
  • Have a cuppa, grab a sticker and celebrate!

Wikimedia Australia has limited funding available for catering. If you would like to apply for funding please apply here or get in touch: contact@wikimedia.org.au
