In March 2009 a member (and interested parties) survey was briefly conducted. There were 12 responses.

Respondents

Are you a member?

11 Yes
01 No, I haven't paid yet
00 No, I haven't been convinced of the benefit yet
00 No, and I don't plan to join
00 No, too expensive

What was asked

"What are the most, second most and third most important things for WMAU to concentrate on?"

  • Support a bid for hosting Wikimania 2011
  • Host a WikiConf in Canberra in late 2009
  • Run Wikipedia Academy events for the general public
  • Run Wikipedia Academy events for academics
  • Run events (e.g. talks) for educators
  • Develop and sell Wikimedia-related merchandise
  • Create a 'Wikimedia for Australian schools' selection
  • Create classroom kit for teaching Wikipedia on the NSW HSC syllabus
  • Organise "backstage pass" style tours of organisations such as museums
  • Concentrate on cultivating positive and broad press, and develop more promotional material (press kits) for the Wikimedia projects
  • Host regular meetups in as many cities as possible, and online events such as editing competitions for members and IRC meetings

Space was provided for other suggestions, and to say which suggestions that respondent would be interested in working on themselves.

Results

  • T= total votes, regardless of ranking
  • WT = weighted total, giving a weight of "3" to 1st-ranked choices, "2" to 2nd-ranked choices, and "1" to 3rd-ranked choices

Other suggestions

(Summary)

  • Overcoming the perceptions of Wikipedia as being unreliable (could be considered part of press)
  • Tangible membership targets; sustained growth
  • Lobbying government on freely licensed and accessible data (public sector information - PSI)
  • Informing members of the organisation's aims and objectives
  • Doesn't consider that the 'Wikimedia for Australian schools' selection will be beneficial given the effort needed to create it

Interpretation

  • Very small sample size so conclusions may not extrapolate very far!
  • "Concentrate on cultivating positive and broad press, and develop more promotional material (press kits) for the Wikimedia projects" clearly gained the most support by far.
  • There is very limited support for "Support a bid for hosting Wikimania 2011", "Run Wikipedia Academy events for academics", "Develop and sell Wikimedia-related merchandise", and "Organise "backstage pass" style tours of organisations such as museums".
  • Moderate support for "Host a WikiConf in Canberra in late 2009", "Run Wikipedia Academy events for the general public", "Run events (e.g. talks) for educators", "Create a 'Wikimedia for Australian schools' selection", "Create classroom kit for teaching Wikipedia on the NSW HSC syllabus", and "Host regular meetups in as many cities as possible, and online events such as editing competitions for members and IRC meetings".
