Meeting_talk: Public (2013-01-06)
I intend to attend the public meeting. Leighblackall 22:07, 21 December 2012 (EST)
I intend to attend also. Why is the list of attendees on facebook and not on our wiki? I do not have a facebook account and do not intend to get one. --Bduke 17:14, 22 December 2012 (EST)
- I've started listing attendees on the meeting page.
- The facebook page is an optional communication mechanism; it allows anyone to easily invite themselves or other people. Some members dont have wmau wiki accounts, but do have facebook accounts. Some non-members in the community don't subscribe to wikimediaau-l or watch w:WP:AUSN. John Vandenberg 12:37, 24 December 2012 (EST)
I'm at the pub meeting early, and unfortunately I have to leave early :) family matters have come up. So while I wait I thought I'd type up a rough idea I was hoping to discuss somehow. I'm on a mobile, so apologies for typos.
My interface with WMAu has almost entirely through my places of work: universities, and similar such edu orgs. In that work, I try to initiate and support the development of open education and research practices.
Recently, another wave of mainstream interest in open ed and research has entered the education space, mostly on the back of MOOCs.
So, when an educational organisation takes an interest in open practices, they quickly realise the quagmire of copyright, bandwidth, format and ROI. This is the point at which I recommend using the Wikimedia project spaces. It is initially a hard sell, but ssems to be gainjng traction.
I'm wondering if WMAu can position to offer orgs and institutions the support to go large. Timely, because commercial ventures like Pearsons Pubblishers and quite a few others areare entering the space. Aust edu orgs dont have the experience, expertise, social capital, copyright management resources that WMAu has, and has access to. WMAu has a value that somehow needs to be realised.. I think that is partly brokering services through "corporate membership"... that's all I can type on this phone, I hope this idea has synergy with some other long term plan Leighblackall 10:31, 6 January 2013 (EST)
