Analysis & Policy Observatory (APO)

Since 2018, APO and Wikimedia Australia have partnered on events and workshops to further both organisations mission to advocate for open access. We participated in their Analysis & Policy Observatory Forum 2018, and more recently have supported their project The Missing Link.

ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society

A new Wikipedian in Residence program at ADM+S started in 2021 to improve Wikipedia articles related to automation technologies, and run events. Read more here.

Australian Academy of Science

In August 2014, to celebrate National Science Week, the Academy held their first "Wikibomb". Over 140 people registered to help us increase the presence of Australian women of science, engineering, and mathematics on Wikipedia. Through online and physical events in Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, participants created 118 new pages. Read more on Wikipedia here.

Australia Council for the Arts

Since 2021, the Australia Council for the Arts has partnered with us on The Record: Australian Music On Wikipedia, a project to increase the number of Wikipedia articles about Australian music. Other partners of The Record include Australian Music Vault, Australian Music Centre, Country Music Association of Australia, and APRA AMCOS. Read more here.

After partnering with us on The Record, APAC hosted a 10 week Wikimedian In Residence, allowing access to their collections and Australian Music Vault exhibition space. Read more here.

Australian Society of Archivists (ASA)

Biodiversity Heritage Library Australia

In 2023, Biodiversity Heritage Library Australia received a Public Record Office Victoria (PROV) Local History Grant to digitise the publications of Victoria’s Field Naturalists’ Clubs. Additional funding from Wikimedia Australia as part of the 2024 Partner Projects, expands on this incredibly important work and make it freely accessible and discoverable on Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons. Bendigo Community Health Services

In 2013, Bendigo Community Health Services hosted a Wikipedia training day in partnership with La Trobe University (Bendigo Campus) and Wikimedia Australia. It was aimed at health information professionals across the region, and open to other information community groups too. Read the full report here.

City of Canning

With the City of Canning, Wikimedia Australia and its WA branch WikiClubWest, gave a series of introduction sessions to Wikipedia and digitisation of materials in 2019. Read more here on Wikipedia.

City of Fremantle

The Freopedia QRpedia project was set up in 2012 in collaboration with the Fremantle Society and the Fremantle Business Improvement District (BID).

City of Sydney

We run regular themed edit-a-thons at the City of Sydney libraries aim to address bias and grow diversity on Wikipedia. Read more here.

Environmental Protection Agency Victoria

In 2024, Olivia Fougerais worked as Wikipedian in Residence with the EPA Victoria to expand Australian environmental knowledge on Wikipedia. Their work will included adding new references and information to Victorian and Australian pages as well as creating new Wikipedia articles and writing blog posts. Read more here.

Franklin Women

A partnership to deliver an annual women in medical sciences edit-a-thon. In 2023, Franklin Women released a series of Wikipedia training videos called More Than A Day, in partnership with Wikimedia Australia. Read more about our collaboration here and find the videos on our Training page.

GLAM Peak

Gold Coast Libraries

In partnership with Wikimedia Australia and La Trobe University, Gold Coast Libraries hosted a Wikipedia training day at their Palm Beach Community Lounge and Library in June 2013. Read the full report here.

In 2012, Wikimedia Australia and Skills Tasmania supported a Wikipedia training day at Hobart Polytechnic where volunteers looked at the various Wikimedia projects and created new Wikipedia pages. Read the full report here.

Inspiring SA

Wikimedia Australia and Inspiring SA ran training sessions in Adelaide to improve local Wikipedia content about STEMM (science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine). Read more here.

Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education & Research

In 2022, Wikimedia Australia funded a discussion paper to help understand how the Wikimedia movement could better support First Nations content, data, and contributors on Wikimedia platforms and beyond. Kirsten Thorpe, Nathan Sentance, and Lauren Booker from the Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education & Research (JIIER) undertook the project. Read more here.

La Trobe University

Between 2013-2015, La Trobe University partnered with Wikimedia Australia on a number of Wikipedia training days across Australia. These included partnerships with Bendigo Community Health Services, Gold Coast Libraries, and LaTrobe Oral Health.

In 2018, staff at the university launched Shut up and Wiki, an informal community ton devote time to editing, writing, and developing Wiki resources. Read more here.

Libraries Tasmania (formerly LINC Tasmania)

As part of the History of Paralympic Australia project, Wikimedia Australia, the Australian Paralympic Committee, and Libraries Tasmania hosted a Wikipedia training day at Kingston Library, Tasmania in February 2012. Wikipedia pages relating to Tasmania were improved and created during the event. Read the full report here.

Museum of Contemporary Art

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) in Sydney ran an edit-at-thon in 2013 to improve the coverage of women artists on Wikipedia. The event was covered by The Sydney Morning Herald. Read the report here.

Museum of Perth

Between 2018-19, Museum of Perth hosted a Wikipedian in Residence and projects including writing Wikipedia articles about current and historic Western Australian newspapers. Read more here on Wikipedia GLAM.

National Gallery of Australia (NGA)

As part of their Know My Name initiative, NGA and Wikimedia Australia have worked together to increase the number of Wikipedia pages about female artists as part of a joint gender equity campaign. Read more about the project here and read more about the 2023 Know My Name event here.

National Library of Australia & Trove

We have run several editathons and training with National Library of Australia, including a session to create Wikipedia pages about the archived newspapers available in Trove in 2013. Between 2018-2020, Wikimedia Australia was represented on the Trove Consultative Committee by our President, Pru Mitchell.

Trove is also incredibly important to us because of the amount of Australian content they make available online. Read more about why we love Trove here.

National Trust

In 2019, as part of the Australian Heritage Festival, National Trust (Victoria) convened an evening workshop with Alex Lum and Pru Mitchell of Wikimedia Australia to raise awareness of the project and work on plans to add public art works to Wikidata.

Open Access Australasia

Open Access Australasia works to make Australasian research outputs open for all. Wikimedia Australia is a member and has supported their annual events since 2021. Read more here.

Paralympics Australia

The Paralympic History project is creating articles about Paralympic sport generally and the Paralympic movement in Australia. This has included events held across Australia to improve coverage of Australian Paralympians. Read more:

Powerhouse Museum

The Powerhouse Museum in Sydney released images with no known copyright restrictions that were then incorporated into Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia Australia partnered with the Powerhouse to run a Backstage Pass event for our members to share experiences between editors and curators. Read more about this session on their blog here.

Queensland University of Technology (QUT)

QUT received funding as part of our Partner Projects to run a digitisation project to upload and describe historic photographic material pertaining to rural Queensland. Read more here.

Seniors Recreation Council of WA

In 2019, The Seniors Recreation Council of WA held their Be Connected Seniors Tech Expo, a ‘Tech Savvy Seniors’ event, which Wikimedia Australia had a table. Later that year we attended Have a Go Day to engage with more people. Read the Be Connected report here.

Shire of Paroo

Paroo Shire Council received funding as part of our Partner Projects to train a group of editors including First Nations people to contribute both regional data and local Indigenous knowledge, which can then serve as a model for other regional councils.

Shire of Toodyay

Toodyaypedia WikiTown project involved creating articles and placing QR codes on landmarks in the Western Australian town, in collaboration with the Toodyay Historical Society. In 2014, seven Wikimedians travelled by bus from Perth to Toodyay to prepare for WikiTown Toodyay. Read an account of their work here. The project was Australia's Cool Project presented at Wikimania 2014.

In 2019, Toodyaypedia Stage 3 celebration was held after the completion of 14 new Wikipedia articles about West Toodyay sites

Standardised Data on Initiatives (STARDIT)

STARDIT is a standardised way to share information about who was involved in an initiative, what was done, what was learned and any impacts which occurred. Wikimedia Australia is supporting this project in its early development. You can read more about the project here.

State Library New South Wales

SLNSW was the first institution to host a Wikipedian In Residence in Australia in 2013. Since then we have partnered on #1Lib1Ref, Wikimedia seminars, and more. The library have also noted SLNSW content on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons led to increased traffic to their website. Read more here.

State Library of Queensland

Since 2010 SLQ have hosted regular Wikipedia events, including #1Lib1Ref, and donated thousands of images to Wikimedia Commons. They have also supported editing workshops, including regional visits to train people in Tambo and Quilpie, and in 2023 hosted our First Nations Wikipedian in Residence. Read more here.

State Library of Western Australia

The State Library of Western Australia has regularly hosted WikiClub West, hosting workshops and giving Wikimedians a space to run their activities. In 2017, Western Australian Wikimedians started a three-month-long residency in the BiblioTECH incubator space at the State Library of Western Australia. State Records Office, Western Australia (SROWA)

The SROWA assisted with the Freopedia QRpedia project, with support from their staff and records access. This included the release of a number of maps under a CC-by-SA license allowing them to be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, and their staff also provided other records from their collections. University of Canberra

RecentChangesCamp2012 was a OpenSpace unconference focused on wikis and online collaborative practices, held in Canberra from 20 - 22 January 2012. This event was supported by several Wikimedians and members of the wider Australian wiki community. Wikimedia Australia provided travel grants for Australians and New Zealanders who wished to attend but were unable to afford travel. Read the report on 2012's unconference here. Wikimedia Australia had also sponsored RecentChangesCamp2011.

University of Divinity

Wikimedia Australia has partnered with the University of Divinity on the Australian Women in Religion Project being spearheaded by Kerrie Burn. The project aims to create 100 new articles on Women in Religion. Read more about their projects here. They also received funding to host a resident as part of our Partner Projects.

University of Melbourne

The University of Melbourne hosted an event as part of Research@library Week in August 2017 to improve the representation of women researchers on Wikipedia. The university is also partner in the Australian Women's Archive Project, and following 2017's event their dataset was added to Wikidata by Wikimedia Australia members and the wider community. In 2019, the university hosted the International Digital Curation Conference. Wikimedia Australia was represented at IDCC19 by Dr Thomas Shafee, who presented a session titled: Wikipedia-integrated academic journals: Ideal platforms for outreach and public communication. Read more here.

UNSW Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications have partnered with us to deliver an annual Women in STEM edit-a-thon. Read more here.

Wikimedia Australia supported Wikimedia in Higher Education, a one day symposium held in 2013. Read our members report here.

Since 2018, University of Sydney students have contributed to Wikipedia as part of their Writing for the Digital World studies. Read more here.

In 2019 and 2022 University of Sydney hosted Worlds of Wikimedia, a Wikimedia conference featuring presentations relating to academic work around Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. Read about 2019 here, and 2022 here.

University of Western Australia

A project addressing colonial legacy impact in rock art content on Wikipedia and beyond. Includes the Noongar Wikitionary and Noongar Wikipedia projects. Read more here.

Waroona Tourist Centre

In 2013, the Waroona Tourist Centre (with support from members of the Waroona Historical Society) teamed with Australian Wikimedians to hold an event to get more photographs of the Waroona region onto Wikimedia projects. Over 2000 photos were taken, with three photos awarded gifts after being judged by photographer Bob Litchfield. Read the report here.

Wikiclub NT

Running from 2016-18, Wikiclub NT saw editors travel around Australia's Northern Territory adding NT history online. This included HerStory: Women on Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, an event run as part of the 2018 NT Heritage Festival. Read more here.

Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand

Wikimedia Australia supported contributors from New Zealand for several years, and since Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand was founded we have partnered on projects such as the 2023 Wikidata Fellowships.

WOMEESA

The Women in Earth and Environmental Sciences in Australasia (WOMEESA) network have partnered with us organising its Wikipedia edit-a-thons where we meet and work together to create, edit, and improve Wikipedia pages of notable women in the field of Earth and Environmental sciences in Australasia. This have run annually since 2022.

Women's Art Register

We have partnered on regular Art+Feminism edit-a-thons to improve content on women artists and creators. Read more here.

Women Write Wiki

A monthly women's editing group at Newtown Women's Library who meet to improve the representation of Australian and Pacific women writers on Wikipedia. Read more here.

Yarra Plenty Regional Library
