  • (Victoria) 2024 March 16, SaturdayKnow My Name NGA Wikipedia edit-a-thon — Research Library & Archives, National Gallery of Australia
Learn how to create and edit Wikipedia entries and help us increase information about Australian women artists on the world’s largest and most popular research tool. Just over 19% of biographies on Wikipedia are about women. When it comes to women artists, that number is even lower. Join Alice Woods (Education and Projects Officer, Wikimedia Australia) and the National Gallery’s Research Library staff for a free interactive workshop where you will have the opportunity to work on Wikipedia entries for Australian women artists. During the workshop you will have access to resources about women artists in the National Gallery’s specialist research library. Basic computer skills are required but no previous Wikipedia editing experience is necessary. Please bring your own laptop. Extra computers will be available on request. Further information will also be provided on registration. Presented in partnership with Wikimedia Australia as part of the National Gallery’s Know My Name initiative to increase representation of women and gender diverse artists. Bookings for the edit-a-thon will open soon.

  • (NSW) 2023 July 11, TuesdayUnderstanding Wikimedia As A Digital Media Platform: Research Seminar/workshop — The University of Sydney Law School Camperdown, NSW 2006 Australia
As a digital platform, Wikimedia projects play a powerful role in the information and media ecosystem, from providing breaking news coverage to data points in Google infoboxes. Wikimedia projects include various types of automation and contribute to the automation of information provided by other platforms and are also being impacted by the regulations attempting to control big tech. There are therefore many areas of overlap with ADM+S areas of interest which could provide a range of fascinating research projects or collaborations which this workshop hopes to foster. Join us for a lunchtime seminar/workshop on researching Wikimedia as a Digital Platform. The session will include lightning talks of 5-10 minutes on current or future research projects, questions, ideas or issues followed by open discussion and input from colleagues and for developing new proposals or collaborations. Speakers may share a paper or concept at various stages of gestation. Lunch will be provided. This event is being hosted as a 2023 ADM+S Symposium Satellite event. If you would like to provide a 5 minute lightning talk please email amanda.lawrence@rmit.edu.au with your name, organisation and a title by Monday 15 May 2023. Please indicate if you will participate in person (preferred) or online. • (National) 2023 May 4, ThursdayAustralian Music Centre - Wikipedia edit-a-thon — Zoom
Wikimedia Australia and the Australian Music Centre are hosting an online Wikipedia Edit-a-thon to create or improve articles about Australian art music creators. The event is part of The Record, an initiative that aims to grow the low number of Wikipedia articles about Australian musicians, organisations and publications. Wikipedia is one of the most popular websites in the world written by an international community of volunteer editors. When you search something online, Wikipedia is often the top result, with information boxes on Google sourced from its pages. We believe that improved documentation will benefit the visibility of Australian creators online. In this Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, we will be focusing on First Nations art music creators, jazz creators, and screen composers. No experience required! Just register to receive the link, sign up for a Wikipedia account in advance and then join the fun. Let's work together to improve the visibility of Australian music! Registrations essential as places are limited. Illustration: Rubii Red

In conjunction with International Women’s Day help us increase information about Australian women artists on Wikipedia. Learn about the world’s largest and most popular research tool and how to edit Wikipedia entries. Just over 19% of biographies on Wikipedia are about women. When it comes to women artists and creators, that number is even lower. Join Belinda Spry and James Gaunt from Wikimedia Australia and the National Gallery’s Research Library staff for an interactive workshop where you will have the opportunity to work on Wikipedia entries of artists featured in the National Gallery’s Know My Name initiative. The workshop will include research resources and access to the Gallery’s specialist Research Library. Basic computer skills are required. No previous Wikipedia editing experience is necessary. Bring your own laptop. Extra computers will be available on request. Further information will be provided on registration. Presented in partnership with Wikimedia Australia as part of the National Gallery’s Know My Name initiative to increase representation of women and gender diverse artists.
