Programs for 2014

Edit training

Continue working with existing GLAM partners and expand to new GLAM partners. Now we have our own public liability insurance, we can look at edit training without partnering as well. Need to take decisions in relation to edit training now the Visual Editor has gone live and update training materials accordingly.

History of the Paralympic Movement in Australia

Continue to support reporting of Paraluympic events. As part of the Linkage Grant with University of Queensland, add in edit training sessions (may need to consider accessibility issues in relation to current training approach), edit-a-thons and cross-media knowledge sharing.

Public lectures about Wikipedia

Prepare some standard slidepacks of various durations (up to an hour) for WMAU members and others to deliver accurate information about Wikipedia, WMF etc to the public. Aim is to create a positive profile of Wikipedia etc, dispell untruths and allow people to use information on Wikipedia at an appropriate level of confidence.

Wikimedia in Higher Education

Following a successful event in April 2013, look for ways to build on this success, e.g. hold a similar event in other cities to reach a different group of academics. Aim is to create positive attitude to Wikimedia projects in higher education (an area of some resistance) and try to introduce writing for WMF projects into curriculum.

Community Building

We need to increase both WMAU membership and the "friends of WMAU" (aka the public mailing list). More volunteers are essential to the success of our programs. Look at more local meetups using a variety of different formats/venues/times. Edit-a-thons may be more appealing.

=Wikimedians-in-Residence

Following strong positive interest by both GLAMs and prospective WiRs, roll out a series of WiRs intiatives with GLAMs. WW1 is likely to be a popular topic but we should remain open to all opportunities. Challenge is getting the business model right to satisfy WMF and recognise that GLAMs range considerably in terms of their financial status (large funded institutions down to volunteer-only groups).

WMAU commemorates Australia-in-WW1

Instead of participating in Wiki Loves Monuments (noting past discussions), run an independent competition here in Australia which would seek to attract contributions to WMF projects that have a connection to Australia & World War 1 (wide-ranging). These could range from photos of war memorials on Commons, new/enhanced content in Wikipedia articles, digitisation of key documents on Wikisource, etc. Award prizes for both quality, random entry, and "surprise" factors. Could partner with local GLAMs for edit-a-thons and launch/award events.

QR code projects

Following successful launch of Freopedia and indications of interest from other towns/districts, engage in new QR projects with selected partners.

Research Database

Using Wikipedia dumps to develop a research database which can be used to answer questions about Australia content development and Australian editor behaviour. Initial questions are likely to relate to hypotheses on editor attrition/retention and article quality to determine if/how/where WMAU might intervene to encourage more productive behaviours.
