Proposal talk: WLM 2013

I'm ok with joining the bandwagon on monuments, but personally I'd prefer a competition which tries to extend our coverage of unphotographed towns.  Ideally add <nowiki>{{Reqphoto}}</nowiki> to every Aussie en-wiki article that could benefit from a photo, and make that our starting list.  Unsexy, but useful. --[[User:99of9|99of9]] 14:02, 9 December 2012 (EST)

Pitfall

Pitfall:access to monuments as a resident in Sydney or Melbourne is going to have a greater selection for momuments compared to someone in Townsville or Albany. Gnangarra 23:07, 3 December 2012 (EST)

Not sure; perhaps some types of monuments. But I wonder whether regional towns have monuments such as town halls (some of them magnificent), court houses, railway stations. And would a register of Indigenous places be admissible? I don't know whether such a register exists, but I suspect the "monuments wouldn't all be in cities. Tony1 23:56, 3 December 2012 (EST)
The Townsville regional council has 1223 items in their local heritage register, so I imagine someone in Townsville would be kept busy! The quality and accessibility of local registers seems to vary wildly though, Moreton Bay (where I spent a lot of time growing up) doesn't seem to have their local one online at all. YMMV I suppose. Online Heritage Registers

I've spent a bit of time tonight looking about for pre-existing lists of monuments that could form the basis of a list for WLM. The best place I found was here:

http://www.heritage.gov.au/ahpi/index.html

Unfortunately the site is a bit primitive, but pretty much everything seems to be there (except the ACT heritage register which always seems to return a blank). The problems are you can only view a handful of records at a time, and there's a pretty hilariously restrictive copyright notice over the whole thing which might make it impossible to use (better hope they don't see us as a "site that is not in the public interest"!)

Some local governments are quite forward looking and have snazzy tools available to search for local heritage sites. Some that I've found are:

Again, most of the time these are tied up in copyright. Not being a laywer, I don't know if that would stop us using a list of these properties as the basis for our competition. Lankiveil 21:38, 6 December 2012 (EST).

They cant copyright data, the purpose of the list is to make these sites identifiable. Gnangarra 10:17, 7 December 2012 (EST)

Timeline

Kerry and others, thanks heaps for plotting out those essentials overleaf.

If we're going to proceed, will we need someone to be in charge of the overall process (or perhaps a sub-committee of the board, including non-board members?). And we'll of course need to decide on a judging panel that will pare down the uploads to the "best 10" for submission.

JJ Harrison might wish to comment. And I wonder whether we shouldn't sift through Commons and en.WP featured and valued picture forums to identify Australians who've nominated and/or reviewed, but perhaps who are not yet members of WMAU. There's User:Benjamint444, who's had some stunning nature pics promoted as FCs at en.WP. And User:Mdf, again, mostly birds, and s/he's not active now; but could advise and/or participate in WLM if attracted back ... Good nature photographers might have many of the skills and knowledge to help members and others to take pics of heritage sites. And besides, we need them within the WMAU tent.

The other thing that needs doing is to locate en.WP articles on Australian heritage sites that have inadequate or no pictorial material; these are holes that need filling.

Maybe people know of useful categories at en.WP and Commons.

PS here are just two interesting articles with leads to Australian Wikipedians who've photographed buildings:

I've emailed one photographer already. Tony1 00:45, 8 December 2012 (EST)
