ESEAP Conference 2022 | 2022-11-18 7:00:00 AM | 2022-11-20 6:00:00 AM | 11 | NSW | UTS Aerial Function Centre |
-33.88354, 151.19895 | Regional conference for Wikimedia communities throughout East, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific in Sydney |
ESEAP Conference 2022 is a regional conference for Wikimedia communities throughout the ESEAP region. ESEAP stands for East, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. Taking place in Sydney, Australia on 18-20 November 2022, this is the second regional conference for these Wikimedia communities. East and Southeast Asia and the Pacific is a developing region within the Wikimedia community. There is a significant number of Wikimedia contributors across the regions, and we have grown the community since our first meeting in 2018 and continue to work towards establishing a well-managed hub. This conference will bring participants from various ESEAP communities together to strengthen collaboration and better understand the issues faced in the region and to look for solutions. ESEAP will be hosting Wikimania 2023, the first in-person Wikimania post-Covid. Following on from the last Wikimania in 2020, this conference will also bring the Core Organising Team for Wikimania 2023 together to help design Wikimania for the post COVID and climate impacted world. Our last ESEAP regional meeting was hosted by Wikimedia Indonesia in Bali in 2018, and a successful ESEAP Strategy Summit was held in Bangkok in June 2019. A lot has changed since then so we aim to re-connect people of the Wikimedia movement within the ESEAP region, to share ideas, and to build regional collaborations. |

February Community Meeting: From tentmaking to pagemaking | 2022-02-09 8:00:00 AM | 2022-02-09 9:30:00 AM | 10 | National | Online |
How editing Wikipedia reshaped an academic career |
For Dr Sam Bowker, creating a Wikipedia on decorative Egyptian tentmaking changed his life. His research for the page led to a series of peer-reviewed publications and exhibitions, and ultimately grew into a project that was recognised by the ARC for research impact in 2018. This February community meeting, we will hear about his collaborative work with the Historians of Islamic Art Association on initiatives for Wikipedia editing as a teaching strategy that has resulted in new pages, expanded stubs, and improved existing sites for Islamic art. Dr Bowker is the Sub Dean Graduate Studies (Faculty of Arts & Education) and a Senior Lecturer in Art History and Visual Culture at Charles Sturt University. This presentation will be followed by open discussion from the community. Add anything you wish to discuss to the agenda here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Online/AustralianCommunityMeeting_9_February_2022#Agenda |

Help improve articles of importance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities on Wikipedia! |
Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia, it’s the 6th most visited website on the internet. Wikipedia content is created and edited worldwide by volunteer contributors. It has long been acknowledged that there is a lack of diversity among contributors. People are meeting up across the world to help remedy the imbalance and bias in the diversity of voices on Wikipedia. The City of Sydney Library has joined this movement, hosting edit-a-thons to increase and improve content relevant to our diverse communities. Everyone is welcome to join our online edit-a-thon. It will be led by Kirsten Thorpe, Nathan “Mudyi” Sentance, and experienced Wikipedia editors Toby Hudson and Caddie Brain. Kirsten’s professional and research interests relate to Indigenous self-determination in libraries and archives. Nathan works to ensure that the cultural and historical narratives conveyed by memory institutions are being told and controlled by First Nations people. With their help, participants will focus on improving articles of importance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities on Wikipedia. No experience is necessary to join the edit-a-thon. Bring your own laptop or tablet and connect to our free wi-fi or use one of our devices. (A limited number of library devices will be available for use at the event). Participants are encouraged to set up a Wikipedia account prior to the workshop. -33.89058, 151.18643 | Franklin Women is excited to be hosting a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon on World Health Day to increase the online representation of women working in health and medical research. |
It's back!! We are thrilled to announce that our second Franklin Women Edit-a-thon will be held on Thursday 7th April 2022. Did you know that there is a serious gender bias on Wikipedia, one of the world’s most-visited websites? Only 19% of the people profiled on Wikipedia are women. This means that many talented women (and their work) are not getting the recognition they deserve, as well as critically skewing perceptions about the contributions that women make to society. Wikipedia Edit-a-thons are a wonderful (and fun!) way to combat this bias and make the internet just that little bit better. Franklin Women is excited to be hosting a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon on World Health Day, Thursday 7th April, to increase the online representation of women working in health and medical research. You don’t need any experience to participate as we will provide all the training you need and several experienced Wikipedians will be there to help you on the day. Editing Wikipedia might sound daunting but the platform is designed so that anyone can contribute, and you can do this in many different ways – from improving the quality of existing articles to adding a whole new page, it all makes a difference! |

Geelong’s musicians are missing from Wikipedia. Let's do something about it! |
Geelong’s musicians are missing from Wikipedia. As part of Surrounds Sound, learn to edit Wikipedia and help write the Australian music record. Wikipedia is one of the most popular websites in the world written by an international community of volunteer editors. When you search something online, Wikipedia is often the top result, with information boxes on Google sourced from its pages. No experience required! Just bring a laptop or device and sign up for a Wikipedia account in advance. This edit-a-thon is presented by Surround Sounds, Australian Music Vault and Wikimedia Australia with founding partner Australia Council for the Arts. It forms part The Record - Australian Music on Wikipedia, a new initiative that aims to grow the low number of Wikipedia articles about Australian musicians, organisations and publications. |

Know My Name edit-athon: help tell a new story of Women in Australian art. |
Learn how to create and edit Wikipedia entries and help us increase information about Australian women artists on the world’s largest and most popular research tool. Just over 19% of biographies on Wikipedia are about women. When it comes to women artists, that number is even lower. Join Alice Woods (Education and Projects Officer, Wikimedia Australia) and the National Gallery’s Research Library staff for a free interactive workshop where you will have the opportunity to work on Wikipedia entries for Australian women artists. During the workshop you will have access to resources about women artists in the National Gallery’s specialist research library. Basic computer skills are required but no previous Wikipedia editing experience is necessary. Please bring your own laptop. Extra computers will be available on request. Further information will also be provided on registration. Presented in partnership with Wikimedia Australia as part of the National Gallery’s Know My Name initiative to increase representation of women and gender diverse artists. Bookings for the edit-a-thon will open soon. |
