Wikipedia is the largest and most-read reference work in history but it wouldn’t exist without thousands of volunteers from around the world creating and updating its pages. This army of ‘Wikipedians’ are ensuring that you and I can rely on it as a wealthy source of information.

Anyone can become a Wikipedian. All you need is a desire to create information for the greater good.

Learn how to start editing and creating content in Wikipedia at this workshop, with a focus on First Nations public policy issues.

APO provides open access to policy and research reports published by organisations on a wide range of issues including First Nations policy and practice, gender inequality, and the Pacific Islands. Learn how to start editing and creating content in Wikipedia, with a focus on First Nations public policy issues.

This event is hosted by APO, held online and at Swinburne University, Hawthorn, Victoria. Interested participants can find more information on how to RSVP here.

APO are addressing this gap through their Wikimedia-funded project, The missing link: Incorporating policy reports into the free knowledge ecosystem.

Adding Australian music content onto Wikipedia

Wikimedia Australia and the Australian Music Centre are hosting an online Wikipedia Edit-a-thon to create or improve articles about Australian art music creators.

The event is part of The Record, an initiative that aims to grow the low number of Wikipedia articles about Australian musicians, organisations and publications.

Wikipedia is one of the most popular websites in the world written by an international community of volunteer editors. When you search something online, Wikipedia is often the top result, with information boxes on Google sourced from its pages. We believe that improved documentation will benefit the visibility of Australian creators online.

In this Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, we will be focusing on First Nations art music creators, jazz creators, and screen composers.

No experience required! Just register to receive the link, sign up for a Wikipedia account in advance and then join the fun.

Let's work together to improve the visibility of Australian music!

Registrations essential as places are limited.

Automated Decision-Making Wikipedia Edit-a-thon (edit) 2021-10-26 11:00:00 PM 2021-10-27 2:00:00 AM 11 National

Edit-a-thon hosted by the ARC Centre for Automated Decision Making and Society

The ADM+S Centre aims to promote greater understanding of automated decision-making technologies, applications and impacts and working with Wikipedia, Wikidata and other Wikimedia platforms is one of the best ways to do this. To support this process ADM+S we are running an editathon.

The ARC Centre for Automated Decision Making and Society(ADM+S) is a new, cross-disciplinary, national research centre, which aims to create the knowledge and strategies necessary for responsible, ethical, and inclusive automated decision-making.

One of the aims of the ADM+S Centre is to promote greater understanding of automated decision-making technologies, applications and impacts and working with Wikipedia, Wikidata and other Wikimedia platforms is one of the best ways to do this. To support this process ADM+S has appointed Amanda Lawrence as Wikimedian-in-Residence for 6 months to help with engagement between Wikimedia platforms and the researchers, students, partners, projects and issues associated with the Centre.

To get the ball rolling we are running an edit-a-thon to bring together ADM+S members and other interested people to work on Wikipedia (and Wikidata) content related to automated decision-making systems and their social, legal and ethical implications.

We now have a new Wikipedia page on automated decision-making, however this is just a stub and needs lots more work. We also need to improve pages for content, people and organisations related to the centre's work that are already on Wikipedia and to create new pages as required.

There is already lots of content on Wikipedia about automation, AI etc but some pages don't have much up to date information or could be improved in lots of ways, particularly in terms of social impacts. Citations to quality research sources are also a key issue for Wikipedia content and it is always great to increase pages on women in technology.

The Edit-a-thon will start with an introduction to the work of the Centre and the topic of automated decision making and an introduction to Wikipedia editing. We will then break into groups for those who are new to editing and those who are more advanced to come together and start editing.

More details and lists of suggested pages to work on will be posted on the ADM+S Wikimedia in Residence page.

Please register with Wikipedia before starting the workshop.

Automating Wikimedia: Open Knowledge, Linked Data and Search (edit) 2022-05-04 6:00:00 AM 2022-05-04 7:00:00 AM 10 International

Join the ADM+S Centre for a discussion on search results, fact checking and the free knowledge movement

The power of search engines has become further entrenched in the wake of the current move to restructure the Web according to the logics of ‘linked data’ and the ‘semantic Web’. With the goal of sharing information according to structured formats that computers (rather than humans) can easily process and analyse, linked data engineers are developing algorithms that abstract information from fact sharing websites like Wikipedia into short, uniform statements that can be more efficiently shared, compared and analysed. Yet it is often unclear when viewing structured information on search results where the information is coming from – some is from Wikimedia but not all – and whether it is credible. At the same time the Wikimedia Foundation has launched Wikimedia Enterprise a new cross-departmental service of the Wikimedia Foundation available via enterprise.wikimedia.com which aims to provide commercial services for ‘organizations that want to repurpose Wikimedia content in other contexts, providing data services at a large scale’. What are the implications of these recent trends for verifiable search results, fact checking and for the free knowledge movement?

Assoc Prof Heather Ford is Head of Discipline for Digital and Social Media in the School of Communications at UTS. She has a background working for global technology corporations and non-profits in the US, UK, South Africa and Kenya. Her research focuses on the social implications of media technologies and the ways in which they might be better designed to prevent misinformation, social exclusion, and algorithmic bias

Liam Wyatt is the Senior Program Manager at the Wikimedia Foundation and has been closely involved with the development of Wikimedia Enterprise. Liam was founder of “GLAM-Wiki” – the intersection of the cultural sector and the Wikimedia movement – and was the world’s first Wikipedian in Residence in 2010.

Prof Mark Sanderson is Dean for Research and Innovation at RMIT University for the Schools of Engineering and of Computing Technologies in the STEM College. He is also a Professor of Information Retrieval (IR). Mark’s research focuses on information retrieval (IR) (e.g. web search engines). He has published on topics such as cross language IR (CLIR), summarization, human interaction and search, image retrieval by captions, word sense ambiguity. His speciality area of research is in the evaluation of searching systems.

Prof Julian Thomas is Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society, and a Distinguished Professor in the School of Media and Communication at RMIT University. He has written widely about digital inclusion, automation and other topics relating to the pasts and futures of new communications and computing technologies.

Dr Amanda Lawrence is an Australian researcher and librarian specialising in open knowledge, research communication and research infrastructure for policy and practice. She is currently Research Fellow, Open Knowledge Systems at RMIT University and Wikimedian in Residence at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S). Amanda is a member of the Wikimedia Australia chapter and currently Secretary for Wikimedia Australia Committee.

Online

Two key conversations about the Census and Wikimedia platforms, and the Universal Code of Conduct

Universal Code of Conduct

A discussion and opportunity to offer feedback on the Enforcement Draft Guidelines of the Universal Code of Conduct, a document that will outline the mechanism, reporting system, division of role, and disbursement of responsibilities within the Wikimedia movement to enforce the UCoC.

Guided by Ramzy Muliawan, Facilitator, Movement Strategy and Governance at the Wikimedia Foundation, the conversation will focus on current and best practices of enforcing similar behavioural policy within the context of Wikimedia volunteers in Australia and Wikimedia Australia.

Census Tools: A discussion

The 2021 Census results will be released next year. This offers massive challenges in terms of updating and maintaining data across Wikimedia platforms. What opportunities might there be for automation or tool development to assist with this process? What needs are there and what might we build together?

Ed Noveras, Project Management Officer, of the 2021 Census Dissemination team and Hugh Stehlik, Digital Service Designer, Dissemination Systems Support and Modernisation from the Bureau of Statistics, will provide and update about the Census and join the discussion.

Join Elena Lappen from the Movement Communications team will be joining our July community meeting to discuss the Wikimedia Foundation’s new annual plan.

How can the Wikimedia Foundation better support the movement in accomplishing objectives and overcoming obstacles? How can it help people in the movement solve problems? What does the movement most want from the Wikimedia Foundation — and how might better communications help?

The Wikimedia Foundation conducted a series of focus groups with participants across communities to explore these questions. They have synthesized the findings into six key recommendations for how the Foundation can better support communities through communications.

Elena Lappen from the Movement Communications team will be joining our July community meeting to discuss the findings and their impact on the Foundation’s new Annual Plan. She will lead a discussion on how to utilise these findings in support of the Australian community and larger regional community.

Join UWA's Deep-Sea Centre to update Wikipedia on new discoveries in deep-sea biology, oceanography, and bathymetry.

The deep sea is often thought of the earth’s last undiscovered frontier, but it is also its largest habitat. This workshop, hosted by the University of Western Australia's deep-sea team and Wikimedian Gideon Digby, will aim to update and refine Wikipedia's coverage of the deep sea. Beginners and experienced editors welcome.

Regional conference for Wikimedia communities throughout East, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific in Sydney

ESEAP Conference 2022 is a regional conference for Wikimedia communities throughout the ESEAP region. ESEAP stands for East, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. Taking place in Sydney, Australia on 18-20 November 2022, this is the second regional conference for these Wikimedia communities.

East and Southeast Asia and the Pacific is a developing region within the Wikimedia community. There is a significant number of Wikimedia contributors across the regions, and we have grown the community since our first meeting in 2018 and continue to work towards establishing a well-managed hub. This conference will bring participants from various ESEAP communities together to strengthen collaboration and better understand the issues faced in the region and to look for solutions.

ESEAP will be hosting Wikimania 2023, the first in-person Wikimania post-Covid. Following on from the last Wikimania in 2020, this conference will also bring the Core Organising Team for Wikimania 2023 together to help design Wikimania for the post COVID and climate impacted world.

Our last ESEAP regional meeting was hosted by Wikimedia Indonesia in Bali in 2018, and a successful ESEAP Strategy Summit was held in Bangkok in June 2019. A lot has changed since then so we aim to re-connect people of the Wikimedia movement within the ESEAP region, to share ideas, and to build regional collaborations.
