Australian institutions contribute significantly to [[Wikimedia Commons]], which is a valuable media resource for Wikipedia writers and the general public. By sharing images, sound and video from their heritage collections, these institutions increase the visibility and accessibility of Australian cultural heritage, and foster a global appreciation for Australia’s historical collections.

The GLAM reports below are a great example of how digital platforms can be used to preserve and promote cultural heritage on an international scale - so where on Wikipedia are images used?

Using the [https://kbnlwikimedia.github.io/GLAMorousToHTML/ GLAMorousToHTML] tool, [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:OlafJanssen Olaf Janssen], Wikimedia & open data at [https://www.kb.nl/en Koninklijke Bibliotheek], has shared some nifty reports to show just that! The GLAMorousToHTML tool can list Wikipedia articles that include images from a given Commons category. It creates a HTML page and Excel file that lists all Wikipedia articles in all languages.

[[File:AnnReynolds.png|thumb|right|Ann Reynolds]]
Australian mentor and dedicated Wikipedian, Ann Reynolds, has recently achieved a significant milestone by completing her 100,000th edit on Wikipedia! Passionate about addressing the gender gap on the platform, Ann embarked on her Wikipedia editing journey in 2017.

Since 2018, Ann has been leading the [[Women Write Wiki]], a women's Wikipedia editing group. The group convenes twice a month, either online or at The Women’s Library in Newtown, inner-Sydney. Initially focused on highlighting Australian women authors in the library's collection, the group has been actively working to close the gender disparity in Wikipedia entries.

In recognition of her impactful contributions, Ann Reynolds was honored with the [[Wikipedian Ann Reynolds recognised for closing the gender gap on Wikipedia|2021 EDNA Award for Community Activism]].

In a successful partnership between the Alice Springs Public Library and Wikimedia Australia, the Donald and Isabel Dowling Collection has been digitally preserved on [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Central_Australian_Historical_Images Wikimedia Commons]. This significant release marks the library's digital debut on the Wikimedia Commons platform, bringing the Central Australian Historical Images collection to an online audience for the first time.

Taken between 1938 and 1948 by Donald and Isabel Dowling, the photographs in the Dowling Collection capture the transformative impact of World War II on Alice Springs and the Northern Territory. Before the war, Alice Springs was an isolated town, of less than 1,000 people. During the war, and particularly after the [[w:Bombing_of_Darwin|Bombing of Darwin]], it was an extremely active staging base and to population grew to over 8,000. Alice Springs even became the war-time capital of the Northern Territory after the civilian administration of the NT was evacuated there from Darwin.

Thanks to the amazing staff at Alice Springs Public Library (including Jordan Phillips, Ella Turner and Carl Mirtschin), and also to WMAU members [[User:Kerry Raymond|Kerry Raymond]] and [[User:Gnangarra|Gnangarra]] for their patient assistance and advice. Many of the 241 images that were uploaded for this project have already been linked to existing Wikipedia pages, and - we hope - will inspire a number more!
== Objectives ==
To effectively manage communications through clearly defined channels in order to mitigate crisis impacts or serious negative repercussions for Wikimedia Australia (WMAU) and the broader movement.

The objectives of this crisis communications plan are to:

* Prepare WMAU staff and Board members to effectively and nimbly manage crisis communications;
* Strategically enhance the WMAU’s brand/role, and the public understanding of the value provided by the broader movement;
* Manage the open distribution of timely and open information to the media, members, and public based on Wikimedia policies and principles;

== Key points ==

# All crises should be reported to and between the EO and WMAU President immediately.
# If required the Crisis Communications Committee (CCC) should convene as soon as possible to decide on strategy and messaging. Information should only be released once a strategy has been agreed.
# WMAU Board and Staff should be informed of the situation and the strategy as soon as possible and kept informed as the crisis plays out.
# Only the CCC designated spokesperson and back-up spokespeople if required are authorised to release information to the media and to the public.
# All staff and Board members should be professional and helpful to the media by connecting them with the designated spokesperson. They should not comment on the situation or provide any information unless confirmed by the CCC.
# All comments should be guided by professionalism and transparency, and serve to mitigate the crisis while reinforcing the leadership role of WMAU.

== Crisis Communications Committee (CCC) ==
The standing subBoard should comprise:

* Executive officer
* WMAU President and/or Vice President
* Designated Board member

Other staff (such as the Communications officer), board members or external people with relevant expertise may be asked to join on an ad hoc basis depending on the situation.

Unless otherwise agreed the EO shall be the official spokesperson and manage media with support from staff as required.

=== '''CCC Roles and responsibilities''' ===

* Coordinator
* Spokesperson - The CCC should designate a spokesperson to interact with the media and other inquirers - this will be the EO unless otherwise agreed.
* Media monitoring and record keeper - the CCC should designate someone to monitor and record developments. This could be a CCC member or the WMAU Communications officer, or if not available some other staff or Board member designated to keep the CCC and Board informed. They should keep a record of crisis details, actions taken, external responses, resolution and other details.
* Compile a list of additional spokespeople if required

=== '''CCC Strategy''' ===
The Crisis Communications Committee should meet and assess the situation to determine:

'''What is the situation?'''

* What is known and who already knows it?
* Is there potential public interest? Does the issue have traction (will it become anything more than a blip on the evening news)?
* Who will be affected?
* What are people feeling – what emotions need to be considered?
* What are the likely scenarios for what will happen next?
* What immediate steps need to be taken?
* Assess what resources are necessary to manage the crisis (i.e. equipment, data, on-location resources).

'''Who needs to be consulted?'''

* Who on staff/Board or externally should be consulted?
* What information is needed and who beyond WMAU staff and Board members need to get it? When will it be available?
* Is legal or PR counsel needed?
* If necessary contact partners, allies, members, and/or the international Wikimedia Foundation etc. and assist with sector-wide talking points, if appropriate
* Consult with other organisations involved to ensure consistent messages and conformity of responses.

'''What are we saying?'''

* Consider whether a comment is necessary? Silence may be the best option.
* Prepare talking points and provide a reply (written or verbal) for incoming inquiries.
* Consider what CAN and CAN’T be said? What are WMAU’s privacy policies?
* Develop factual, detailed messages that reflect the status of the crisis, WMAU’s response, and, if possible, proactive steps to resolve the situation.
* Messages should reflect the organization’s overall messages, leadership role, and resource status. They should attempt to reinforce the positive and be action/solution oriented if possible.
* Consider what media know about the situation and what their potential interest is. Consider questions that will be asked in order to prepare answers for them – including the questions you hope will not be asked.
* Recognize that unfavorable, inaccurate information, if not corrected, could have future negative consequences requiring additional responses.
* Develop a written statement and consider the need for additional materials such as a fact sheet, backgrounder, web site resources, FAQs, etc.
* No comment" is not generally an acceptable response. If an answer is unknown or cannot be immediately answered, make note of the question, tell the inquirer you will get back with him/her, and do so. If the question cannot be answered due to a policy (such as sharing personnel information, etc.) let the inquirer know that.
* Personnel matters are to remain confidential.
* Develop pre-approved Statements if necessary – Responses for common media inquiries should be created and approved by the board as necessary.

'''How are we communicating?'''

* Designate a communications platform for all internal messaging.
* Choose key platforms for public communication - could include:
** website/newsletter article – low urgency – also good as a follow up to any major situation;
** one-on-one meetings – higher urgency, specific audience targeted such as legislators;
** media release – higher urgency, broad public appeal; media conference – high urgency and big issue; etc.)
** Social media platforms
* What media will be contacted?
* Implement methods for updating key audiences with ongoing information.

'''Response options'''

# No action taken
# Refer issue to other experts, key stakeholders or international Wikipedia Foundation and, if necessary, assist in creating messages.
# Release a proactive statement to appropriate audiences (members, media, key stakeholder etc.)
# Obtain counsel to direct further actions and review position (legal or Wikimedia Foundation advice).
# Prepare to make reactive statements if needed.

=== '''After the crisis:''' ===

* Loose ends - complete any follow up calls, email updates, etc.
* Distribute post-crisis communications.
* Appropriate communications should be made outlining the resolution of the crisis to appropriate audiences. If changed, website should be updated. All media contacts should be double checked for completed interaction, and the media list updated in Xero.
* Crisis Communications Review – CCC and Board to evaluate response, actions, what didn’t work, what needs to be improved/revised for the future, etc.
* Media Coverage Assessment – Review coverage. Check for message consistency and saliency. Are there issues that might need further clarification?
* File and Update notes, documentation and Crisis Communications Plan as necessary.
Ali Smithhttps://wikimedia.org.au/wiki/Love_Data_Week_-_My_Kind_of_DataLove Data Week - My Kind of Data2024-02-11T22:38:12Z
Ali Smith: edited caption

Library Lovers’ Day is a day to think about the important role that libraries play in our lives and in our communities as a place of safe and equitable access to information.

The staff at Wikimedia Australia are library lovers and it is clear to us that Wikipedia and libraries have similar aspirations and goals. They both exist to help people who are looking for information and these similarities have led to hundreds of collaborations between libraries and Wikipedians to build the future of open knowledge.

[[File:Women Write Wiki banner.jpg|400px|center]]

In honour of Library Lovers’ Day 2024, we are featuring one of our favourite libraries - [https://thewomenslibrary.org.au The Women’s Library in Newtown], Sydney. The Women’s Library is a community-based library and a hub of lesbian and feminist activity. It stocks books "by women, for women" and aims to make feminist and lesbian literature more accessible.

The library hosts many events, exhibitions and groups including the [[Women Write Wiki]] project which has and continues to add amazing content to Wikipedia platforms.
| description = As we embrace the digital age, ensuring a safer online environment becomes increasingly vital, especially for our younger users
}}

Did you know it’s estimated that one in three internet users is a child under 18 years of age? 1

As we embrace the digital age, ensuring a safer online environment becomes increasingly vital, especially for our younger users. That's why the global initiative of Safer Internet Day on 6 February holds such significance. It's a reminder of our collective responsibility to make the online world a secure and enriching space for everyone, especially children.

This year, we're celebrating [https://www.esafety.gov.au/newsroom/whats-on/safer-internet-day Safer Internet Day] alongside some significant strides in child protection within the Wikimedia community. The Wikimedia Foundation has recently unveiled two crucial initiatives aimed at safeguarding the well-being of young users who access and contribute to Wikimedia projects.

Firstly the [https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_Child_Rights_Impact_Assessment Child Rights Impact Assessment (CRIA)] was released mid-January 2024. This assessment demonstrates Wikimedia's commitment to understanding and mitigating any potential risks faced by children on our platforms. By comprehensively analysing the impact, risks, and opportunities involved, we can better tailor our policies and practices to create a safer space for young minds to explore and learn.

The Wikimedia Foundation has also introduced a [https://diff.wikimedia.org/2024/01/25/wikimedia-foundation-launches-new-child-safety-policy-to-better-protect-younger-users/ new policy dedicated to Combating Online Child Exploitation]. This policy provides clear guidelines on how the Wikimedia Foundation’s [https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Trust_and_Safety Trust and Safety teams], along with legal experts, will address sensitive content and harmful conduct on our projects. It's a proactive step towards ensuring that Wikimedia platforms remain essential hubs of knowledge and creativity while actively combating any form of exploitation or harm.

Here at Wikimedia Australia, we wholeheartedly support these initiatives. We believe that everyone, regardless of age, should be able to access the wealth of information and knowledge available on Wikimedia platforms in a safe and supportive environment. By prioritising the well-being of our youngest users, we not only protect them from harm but also empower them to explore, create, and contribute to our shared knowledge with confidence. And by safeguarding our platforms, we foster an environment where young children can navigate safely, grow, learn and ultimately become informed and empowered adults.

So as we celebrate Safer Internet Day with others around the globe, let’s celebrate the steps we are taking for a safe, secure and inclusive online world for generations to come.
The Library and Information Science WikiProject identifies and fills gaps in library and information science (LIS)-related content.

A 2024 partner project between Wikimedia Australia, Australian and New Zealand Society of Indexers and Charles Sturt University, School of Information and Communication Studies, the project aims to identify and fill gaps in library and information science (LIS)-related content on Wikimedia platforms.

This project will also establish Mary Coe as the first Wikimedian in Residence at the Australian and New Zealand Society of Indexers (ANZSI). It will provide opportunities for ANZSI members (professional indexers) and CSU SICS (information studies/librarianship) students to develop their skills and confidence in Wiki editing and in the areas of librarianship, information studies, metadata and indexing.

The majority of ANZSI members and CSU SICS students are female, so addressing the gender gap in Wikimedia work will be a secondary benefit of this project.
Victoria’s Field Naturalists are the custodians of extensive local knowledge and records. Their organisations seeded rich communities of passionate experts who have explored and researched the biodiversity of their specific regions across time. These organisations have little or no online presence on Wikipedia.
[[File:The Victorian naturalist (1975) (14783604095).jpg|thumb|Image from the Victorian Naturalist (1975) on Wikimedia Commons]]
In 2023, Biodiversity Heritage Library Australia received a [https://prov.vic.gov.au/round-21-recipients-2022-2023 Public Record Office Victoria (PROV) Local History Grant] to digitise the publications of Victoria’s Field Naturalists’ Clubs. Additional funding from Wikimedia Australia as part of the [[2024 Partner Projects Announced|2024 Partner Projects,]] will expand on this incredibly important work and make it freely accessible and discoverable on Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons.

The project gathers the rich social and natural histories of Victoria's regional Field Naturalists Clubs to make them freely accessible and discoverable by:

*creating a Wikipedia page for each [[w:Wikipedia:Notability|notable]] Field Naturalist Club, complete with Introduction, Current Activities, History, Publications, References, images, and links;
*uploading images and their data into Wikimedia Commons;
*creating/enhancing Wikidata records for the people significant to each organisation throughout history (founders, committee members, authors, funders, campaigners, speakers);
*creating Wikidata records for each organisation’s publication/s, as well as each volume/issue/article; and
*linking the above elements to each other and to the websites and publications of each organisation.
| description = Wikimedia Australia is excited to support STARDIT's journey, a groundbreaking fusion of innovation and transparency in the open-knowledge landscape.
}}

Last year Wikimedia Australia agreed to support STARDIT, an innovative development in online open knowledge sharing. WMAU will provide hosting and technical support for STARDIT on our servers, alongside backing the ongoing development of the project. Jack Nunn is Director of the not-for-profit education organisation Science for All, and developed the concept for STARDIT from his extensive experience and research on equitable and ethical ways for all people to actively engage in science. In this insightful guest blog post, Jack generously shares his perspective on STARDIT and its envisioned role as a trusted entity in the open data ecosystem.

=== What on Earth is going on? ===
What on Earth is going on? It’s a common question, and the truth is that often, no one knows.

As a species, I believe we can do better at collecting, reporting and learning from our collective human actions.

Standardised Data on Initiatives (STARDIT) is an attempt to build a way of answering this question, with anyone on Earth able to access, contribute, edit or verify information about collective human actions (known as ‘initiatives’). The basic idea is that there should be a standard way to describe human actions, and any consequences, in a way that works across languages and cultures. Currently, we don’t even have a standardised way to spell standardized in English.

=== How can you use STARDIT? ===
Think of STARDIT as a way of creating a Wikipedia page about something that wouldn’t normally have an entry. This could be anything from data about a clinical trial, environmental research, a community arts project, a car, or the very device you are reading this on.

STARDIT provides a way for anyone to collaborate on describing collective action. Crucially, it can be used across different areas of human knowledge, from health research, environmental research and education, to government policies, manufacturing, or the arts. It can report data on who did which tasks, where resources came from and any impacts or outcomes. STARDIT enables multiple categories of data to be reported in a standardised way across disciplines and languages. Because the data is organised into common shared data fields across disciplines, it makes it easier to compare initiatives in a way which has not been possible in the past.

This can enable well-founded comparisons of the effectiveness of different methods, including the most effective methods of involving different stakeholders. In this way, we hope STARDIT can support participatory ways of working and help improve the equity and quality of initiatives worldwide.

“All major problems, including complex global problems such as air pollution and pandemics, require reliable data sharing between disciplines in order to respond effectively. Such problems require evidence-informed collaborative methods, multidisciplinary research and interventions in which the people who are affected are involved in every stage” Taken from the peer-reviewed article ‘[https://doi.org/10.1186/s40900-022-00363-9 Standardised data on initiatives—STARDIT: Beta version]’

If we’re serious about preventing irreversible climate change, pausing mass extinction, or preventing sea levels rising any higher than already projected - we need evidence informed action. The solutions will involve research, government policy, education interventions, manufacturing and the arts. People working in each one of these disciplines need to be able to communicate with each other, understand who did what, and understand any reported impacts or outcomes. For example, educating women and girls has been highlighted as one of the most effective ways of preventing irreversible climate change [Ref]. Imagine the complexity of trying to report how education has led to the outcome of reduced climate change across languages and disciplines. STARDIT can be used to report data in all these areas, and can be used as a tool to help us understand what the most effective methods are for education in different settings, and any impacts.

=== How does STARDIT work? ===
STARDIT uses Wikidata as one of the ways of structuring the data. Wikidata is ‘a free and open knowledge base that can be read and edited by both humans and machines’. By using Wikidata, STARDIT works across human languages for both humans and machines. By working across languages, free, open access, editable by anyone, STARDIT provides standardised, verified information which can be read by both humans and machines. By ensuring all the data is open access, we can help ensure more people can be involved in sharing knowledge and learning.

So why was STARDIT built, and why is it urgent to build on this project?

=== Trust ===
Trust in information underpins human civilisation. During the public consultation on STARDIT, one person said ‘most of our decisions are based on trust’. Millions of people around the world are trusted to grow and make our food, manufacture our medicines, clothes and other products. Millions are involved in research, data sharing, government policy, education and environmental management. We trust that these initiatives, or data about them, are of a certain quality. But often it is blind trust. We have limited ways of understanding where things have come from, how they were made, how decisions were made, how resources were sourced, if the people involved were enslaved, how humans and other animals involved were treated, and any environmental impacts. We often don’t have access to this raw data to help us make informed decisions, and to help us trust it is of ‘good quality’, or aligns with our own values.

In addition, we also know that there are often powerful people with vested interests funding misinformation campaigns which contradict everything that the data and evidence tells us we should be doing, if we want to prevent things such as irreversible climate change and mass extinction<ref>Farrell J, McConnell K, Brulle R. Evidence-based strategies to combat scientific misinformation. Nat Clim Change. 2019;9(3):191–5. <nowiki>https://doi.org/10.1038/s41558-018-0368-6</nowiki>.</ref>. Similarly, in health research, industry funded research is more likely to have outcomes favoring those with financial interests who are sponsoring the research<ref>https://doi.org/10.1136/bmj.326.7400.1167</ref>. While it's easy to attack or blame individuals or even organizations and countries for sharing incorrect or false data, we all need to be involved in improving access to reliable data; to help uphold the United Nations human right to “seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers”.<ref>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_warfare</ref>

"Information warfare" presents an even more alarming reality in an age of increasingly accessible machine learning and AI. Divide and conquer is an old tactic for a reason, and we need to empower people to connect and share reliable data across the world.

What if humanity could unite around shared values which are codified in multiple languages? What if we had open data about all data, products, media and policies? What if we had evidence-informed methods of achieving the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, which everyone can understand and act on, regardless of location, income or spoken language?

In a world where machine-generated content is getting more sophisticated, and harder for most people to identify, it is essential that we humans have tools to be able to collectively share information about who (or what) was involved in the creation of information such as media (including videos), algorithms, policies, medical guidelines, molecules (such as drugs) and larger objects (like cars, airplanes and satellites).

We can only do this by working together as a species. We can only work together by understanding what on Earth is going on, and what, collectively, we think we should do.

There will be no right or wrong answers, but with STARDIT, the intention is that at least there will be data. And data about the data, or the lack of data. This data can help us make more wise decisions, and be used by the self-correcting lens of the scientific method to save us from the greatest threat facing humanity and life on Earth, ourselves.

=== What now? ===
It was five years ago that Science for All started hosting the co-design process for STARDIT, and in that time we’ve co-created Alpha and Beta versions with over 100 people around the world, [https://doi.org/10.1186/s40900-022-00363-9 published peer-reviewed articles] about the project and had the project endorsed by Australian Genomics. Having Wikimedia Australia as a partner organization is a wonderful evolution for the project.

By working with Wikimedia Australia and others to build Version One of STARDIT, we hope this will itself build trust in this project, and help realise some of the more ambitious goals of the project.

Anyone in the world can get involved in this project.
The next step is to involve as many people as we can - as equitably and inclusively as possible.

To help do this, we are actively seeking funding from sources which align with the co-created values of the project. At the moment this project relies on volunteers.

=== Get involved ===
I hope that the values and aims of the STARDIT project resonate with some of you reading this.
* Volunteer your time to help code, and use machine learning to create reports, or manually create a report
* Get involved in any aspect of the project including governance and co-authoring publications
* Become a partner organisation and publicly sign-up as a supporter or partner of the STARDIT project

=== Conclusion from WMAU ===
In closing, Wikimedia Australia is excited to support STARDIT's journey, a groundbreaking fusion of innovation and transparency in the open-knowledge landscape. We encourage anyone interested in open data to connect with Jack at Science for All and STARDIT. The importance of partnerships in building a culture of openness, transparency and accessibility is absolutely crucial. Through our collaboration we’ll continue to advocate for fair access to knowledge and through practical initiatives such as STARDIT, contribute to a more informed and digital future.
Ali Smithhttps://wikimedia.org.au/wiki/Know_My_Name_NGA_Wikipedia_edit-a-thonKnow My Name NGA Wikipedia edit-a-thon2024-01-08T01:38:50Z
Ali Smith: updated ketword month

}}I’m Olivia Fougerais, a former legal counsel who worked in both France and Japan.

[[File:Wiki residency picture OliviaF.jpeg|thumb|right|Wikimedian in Residence, Olivia at EPA Victoria]]Through my legal and international experience, I realised how little people understood about both legal topics and environmental matters and I have always wondered how I could make a change. I believe we can never be too informed about the environment we live in and this lack of information is causing disconnection with our reality. That’s why I have a keen interest in developing environmental awareness through online platforms and decided to contact Wikimedia Australia and pitched the idea of doing a residency at [https://www.epa.vic.gov.au Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria].

In preparing this project I came up with several goals:
*I wanted to learn more about the environmental challenges in Victoria,
*understand how the EPA works to monitor and promote environmental quality,
*and more importantly, I wanted to contribute to sharing awareness about environmental protection.

I thought having more Australian knowledge about the environment put on Wikipedia would be beneficial and different from the previous GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums) residencies that took place in Australia. It was a great opportunity to reach different professionals and potentially inspire new volunteer editors to join the Wiki adventure in the future. As a woman and a legal professional from France, I also thought that my perspective might bring a different
approach to the platform.

Belinda from Wikimedia Australia and myself got in touch with Cathy Heycock, Director of Public Affairs at EPA, who was really enthusiastic about the project. We all agreed on the necessity of conveying scientific information simply as there is a real need to reach more people.

Science is like law, it is useful to those who understand it. And I am thrilled to be working on this issue.

On my first day, I was given a quick tour of the headquarters situated in Carlton and started working from a EPA Wikipedia page to expand towards other pages related to the environment.

I quickly realised that so much more information was needed on so many pages.

By adding pictures, new information and references, the page started growing and I added more and more other ideas to create and add to other pages.

EPA Staff have been very kind and made themselves available to help me get in touch with some of their colleagues to get further information to document my research.

I can’t wait to see how much I will have added by the end of the project!

__NOTOC__

Wikimedia Australia is delighted to announce the successful awarding of four grants to partner organisations, fostering collaboration and closing knowledge gaps. These initiatives will fund four Wikimedians in Residence (WiR) at four diverse organisations, enabling them to connect with and leverage unique information, enriching our collective knowledge. These residents will actively share and cultivate skills within Wikipedia and other Wiki platforms, contributing to community growth. Join us in congratulating these grant winners, and stay tuned for exciting updates as they embark on their transformative residencies!
=== ANZSI Wikimedian in Residence ===
This project will establish [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User%3AMaryCoe Mary Coe] as the first Wikimedian in Residence at the [https://www.anzsi.org/ Australian and New Zealand Society of Indexers (ANZSI]). Support for the project will be provided by the [https://arts-ed.csu.edu.au/schools/information-communication-studies School of Information and Communication Studies at Charles Sturt University] (CSU SICS).

Mary will focus on identifying and filling gaps in [[w:Library_and_information_science|library and information science]] (LIS)-related content (including [[w:Index_(publishing)|book indexing]]) on Wikipedia, Wikidata and other Wikimedia platforms. Her background as an information professional and connections with both organisations will enable her to tap into the resources needed for this work. She is a book indexer, metadata specialist, Editor of the journal The Indexer: The International Journal of Indexing and an Adjunct Lecturer at CSU SICS.

Capacity building is a major goal of this project, and the role of the WiR will be primarily to provide opportunities for ANZSI members (professional indexers) and CSU SICS (information studies/librarianship) students to develop their skills and confidence in Wiki editing.

Mary will provide training on the Wikipedia and Wikidata platforms and run editathons with them. The majority of ANZSI members and CSU SICS students are female and addressing the gender gap in Wikimedia work will be a secondary benefit of this project. [[w:User:Oli.f28|Olivia Fougerais]] will work with the resources available at the [https://www.epa.vic.gov.au Environmental Protection Agency Victoria] to expand Australian environmental knowledge on Wikipedia. Their work will include adding new references and information to Victorian and Australian pages as well as creating new Wikipedia articles and writing blog posts. Editathons will also be provided to raise community awareness of environmental issues unique to Australia. [[EPA_Wikimedian_in_Residence|View the project page to learn more]].
This project will be delivered with Northern Territory-based Wikipedian [[w:User:Tenniscourtisland|Caddie Brain]] at the [https://www.ecnt.org.au Environment Centre NT in Darwin].

There are significant gaps in terms of the NT’s ecology, ecosystems, environmental assets, controversies and key project information on Wikipedia. This project will focus on updating and growing the NT’s environmental pages including plants, animals, ecosystems, major projects, and key players, as well as looking to build First Nations representation on Wikimedia platforms in a self-determined way. === Victorian Field Naturalist Clubs with the Biodiversity Heritage Library ===
This project will be coordinated by [[w:User:Nicolekearney|Nicole Kearney]] from the [https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/collection/bhlau Biodiversity Heritage Library,] along with a Wikimedian in Residence. It will gather the rich social and natural histories of [https://www.fncv.org.au Victoria’s regional Field Naturalists Clubs] and make them freely accessible and discoverable on Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons and linking the above elements to each other and to the websites and publications of each organisation. This will build on existing work taking place thanks to a grant from the [https://prov.vic.gov.au/community/grants-and-awards/local-history-grants-program Public Record Office of Victoria Local History Grant] to the Biodiversity Heritage Library to digitise the publications of Victoria’s Field Naturalists’ Clubs. The funding from Wikimedia Australia will expand this project to include the gathering of photographs and stories, and the creation of the connected hub of knowledge.

Wikimedia Australia aims to support collaborative initiatives that build skills and prioritise under-represented communities information. Together we are committed to fostering inclusivity, amplifying diverse voices, and building a more equitable and interconnected Wikimedia community.
Today is Public Domain Day! This legal transition of copyright works into the public domain usually happens every year on January 1 based on the individual copyright laws of each country and, in Australia, one of the important works entering the public domain is this wonderful photo of The Cazneaux Tree.

The Cazneaux Tree, captured by photographer Harold Cazneauc, was taken in 1937.
[[File:Spirit of endurance 1937.jpg|thumb]]
It is one of his most famous images and it is a stunning image of a solitary river red gum tree, near Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia. The title he gave to the photograph was "The Spirit of Endurance", for the qualities he felt were epitomised the tree's survival in a harsh environment.

The tree still stands and is a notable landmark within the Flinders Ranges National Park, it appears on the National Trust of South Australia's Register of Significant Trees.

What has been added to the public domain in 2024?

[[File:Steamboat Willie (1928) by Walt Disney.webm|thumb|Steamboat Willie]]

Internationally, this year features an addition to the public domain of the history of animated film: [https://diff.wikimedia.org/2024/01/01/welcome-to-the-public-domain-mickey-mouse/ Steamboat Willie], the first published animated short featuring the character of Mickey Mouse.

Whilst closer to home, The National Library of Australia also has a [https://www.nla.gov.au/stories/news/2024/public-domain-2024 blog post] of notable Australian works to enter the public domain in 2024. The National Library collection items in the public domain this year include unpublished works by authors who died in 1953, orphan works (i.e. works with no known author) created in 1953, and government publications created in 1973.
