I am a Wikipedian and Senior Lecturer in Writing Studies, School of Literature, Art and Media, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Sydney. My Wikipedia username is Fransplace.

Teaching with Wikipedia:

I have been using Wikipedia as a platform for writing assessments in undergraduate coursework since 2012 and developed of Wikipedia Education Program at the University of Sydney in 2013.

In 2018, I am coordinating and teaching two credit bearing Open Learning Environment (OLE) units that are part of the University of Sydney's new curriculum:

Writing with Wikipedia. Students taking this 2cp unit learn about the pillars and guidelines that govern Wikipedia editing, learn to use the sandbox and talk pages, edit and improve articles. The unit is taught online with asynchronous tutorials and runs for 4 weeks.
Writing for the Digital World. This 6cp unit runs for a full semester and is taught partly online, with 2 live hours per week for 12 weeks. Students create an article about an underrepresented topic in their disciplinary area.

Symposia and editathons:

In April 2013, Wikimedia AU and I cohosted the first Wikipedia in Higher Education Symposium at the University of Sydney, and hosted a second colloquium in March 2014. In 2014 I created online collaboration opportunities between students at the University of Sydney and University of Mississippi, and began research projects in partnership with Robert E. Cummings, winner of the MLA's Mina P. Shaugnessy Prize, and author of Lazy Virtues: Teaching Writing in the Age of Wikipedia.

In June 2014 with major contributions from lead tutor, I ran the first Wadewitz Tribute Editathon at the University of Sydney, and participated that year in a range of Editathons in the US, Canberra and the University of Sydney's Vice Chancellor's Wikibombing to recognise our women of science. I have continued to host Wadewitz Tribute Editathons since 2015.

Editorial work:

I am co-editor of WikiStudies [1], an interdisciplinary journal devoted to research and scholarship on the social production of knowledge in the digital age, and on the editorial board of WikiJournal of Humanities [2].
