| 18:57:07 From Margaret Donald to Everyone : So will we be also talking about WLE2021?
| |
| 18:58:56 From Wikimedia Australia to Everyone : Yes sure!
| |
| 19:00:44 From Ann Reynolds to Everyone : No camera - I’m eating dinner!
| |
| 19:01:28 From SiobhanLeachman to Everyone : Hi Annie!
| |
| 19:02:22 From Pru Mitchell to Everyone : Hello from the Kulin Nation
| |
| 19:03:55 From Kerry Raymond to Everyone : If you want a silly hat, go to the video menu and choose a filter
| |
| 19:04:57 From Pru Mitchell to Everyone : Come to Community Meeting to learn Advanced Zoom gimmicks. Thanks @Kerry
| |
| 19:07:13 From Wikimedia Australia to Everyone : Sorry all, I meant to say we are wanting to record the presentations tonight for those who can’t join us. (But not the open conversation.) If there are any concerns let me know.
| |
| 19:07:31 From Liam Wyatt to Everyone : https://scholia.toolforge.org/
| |
| 19:07:46 From Toby Hudson to Wikimedia Australia(Direct Message) : ok from me
| |
| 19:11:08 From Liam Wyatt to Everyone : http://wikicite.org/statistics.html
| |
| 19:11:26 From Kerry Raymond to Everyone : Liam, could you share your screen so we can see this ?
| |
| 19:22:18 From Amanda Lawrence to Everyone : how is that better than using a doi?
| |
| 19:23:00 From David Nind to Everyone : when the data in Wikidata is improved, then it flows through into the reference
| |
| 19:23:27 From David Nind to Everyone : that should be Wikidata item is improved...
| |
| 19:23:30 From Toby Hudson to Everyone : and the improvements are done directly on wikidata, so help bootstrap other queries too
| |
| 19:23:32 From Margaret Donald to Everyone : Notice the blue in the article titles. That means that someone may have found a link to the article itself so that you can read it
| |
| 19:24:37 From Kerry Raymond to Everyone : I have a paper in front of me (found it on the web, as I don't have access to the "scholarly database"). How do I get the Q number?
| |
| 19:24:58 From Kerry Raymond to Everyone : I most likely found the paper via Trove or SLQ catalogue.
| |
| 19:25:05 From Margaret Donald to Everyone : Type the title int wikidata and search for the title
| |
| 19:25:26 From Toby Hudson to Everyone : Entity Explosion will one day be able to do that for you Kerry (find the Q number), but it can't yet.
| |
| 19:26:21 From Margaret Donald to Wikimedia Australia(Direct Message) : Is there any room for my talk??
| |
| 19:27:32 From Kerry Raymond to Everyone : E.g. Trove has given me {{Citation | author1=Buch, Neville | title=No regrets in the evening life : the history of Junction Park State School (1888-2013) | publication-date=2015 | publisher=Boolarong Press | isbn=978-1-925236-46-0}}
| |
| 19:37:16 From Kerry Raymond to Everyone : This book isn't in Wikidata (although the school is -- heritage listed). Is there a way I can export it into WikiCite so I could re-used more easily in another article (say [[Annerley, Queensland]] or whatever)
| |
| 19:38:17 From Kerry Raymond to Everyone : I mean to ask "is there and *easy* way -- touch of a button -- to take a Trove (or any citation I have made manually" into WikiCite for easy reuse
| |
| 19:38:32 From Toby Hudson to Everyone : @Kerry I think the only process for that would be to first create a WD item for it, populate it as fully as you can, and then use Cite Q on both articles... Long process but valuable for others.
| |
| 19:39:00 From Margaret Donald to Everyone : easy if you have a DOI
| |
| 19:39:26 From Margaret Donald to Everyone : use sourcemd
| |
| 19:39:29 From Pru Mitchell to Everyone : Siobhan - is there an easy way to add books to Wikidata by ISBN (if no DOI)
| |
| 19:39:55 From Liam Wyatt to Everyone : yes: ‘cite q’ can only find information that is already in Wikidata. so if you want to cite a work that doesn’t have a wikidata item already, you first need to create it.
| |
| 19:40:21 From Liam Wyatt to Everyone : sourceMD is this tool: https://sourcemd.toolforge.org/
| |
| 19:40:33 From Toby Hudson to Everyone : sourcemd says it has a create from ISBN... I'll try it now on yours Kerry
| |
| 19:40:33 From SiobhanLeachman to Everyone : Good question! I use Zotero for scholarly articles without DOIs.
| |
| 19:40:41 From Liam Wyatt to Everyone : it helps you to create WD items about publications.
| |
| 19:40:50 From Kerry Raymond to Everyone : @Toby, why not create an easy way, if there is already a standard structured citation, e.g. {{cite web}}, {{cite book}} with known parameters (and hence interpretable) to just click on it and say "export it"
| |
| 19:41:42 From Liam Wyatt to Everyone : for Zotero users: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Zotero/Cita
| |
| 19:41:52 From Toby Hudson to Everyone : @Kerry I don't know of any way to do that export from en-wiki templates *to* wikidata, but that's a good idea for Liam and WikiCite to work on.
| |
| 19:41:56 From Pru Mitchell to Everyone : This is scary Margaret - could spend my life fixing references!
| |
| 19:41:59 From Liam Wyatt to Everyone : we (wikicite) have funded the creation of this Zotero plugin for wikidata.
| |
| 19:42:07 From Pru Mitchell to Everyone : Oh! Do we need a Zotero tutorial next time?
| |
| 19:42:39 From Liam Wyatt to Everyone : there’s a presentation workshop coming up soon- may 31. sign up from that page if you want. Or, I can arrange for him to give a tutorial just for ANZ group?
| |
| 19:42:40 From Kerry Raymond to Everyone : No, we need better tools!
| |
| 19:42:44 From Amanda Lawrence to Everyone : the problem with Zotero is it doesn't include dois for books or reports. how does your plugin cope with that?
| |
| 19:42:48 From SiobhanLeachman to Everyone : This might be useful for books https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Walkuraxx/e-scholarship
| |
| 19:42:53 From Ann Reynolds to Everyone : Wow. That was great.
| |
| 19:43:07 From SiobhanLeachman to Everyone : Margaret is amazing!
| |
| 19:45:35 From SiobhanLeachman to Everyone : Yes, I agree with Margaret as I’ve been pulled up when using Cite Q along with other citations. Editors don’t like the inconsistent structure.
| |
| 19:46:40 From Kerry Raymond to Everyone : I am thinking of a gadget for source editor where you select the citation text and click the side-bar button to Export-to-WikiCite. With Visual Editor, it might need to be more built-in, but the same deal, select the citation (as a [n] in the displayed text) and some drop-down has the export-to-WikiCite (or as a bonus, export-to-my-personal-cite library). Of course you need to the opposite gadget to import them back again
| |
| 19:49:21 From Margaret Donald to Everyone : Hi Alex. Missed the name of your package...
| |
| 19:49:57 From Liam Wyatt to Everyone : here’s the grant page with documentation. blogpost coming soon https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikicite/e-scholarship/Evolution_and_Evolvability_(WikidataR_for_Wikicite)
| |
| 19:51:15 From Kerry Raymond to Wikimedia Australia(Direct Message) : you might want to mute the person with the background dog and/or baby
| |
| 19:51:48 From Wikimedia Australia to Kerry Raymond(Direct Message) : I think it might be Alex!
| |
| 19:51:58 From Kerry Raymond to Wikimedia Australia(Direct Message) : Ahh ....
| |
| 19:52:14 From Wikimedia Australia to Kerry Raymond(Direct Message) : PS loving Zoom!!!
| |
| 19:52:47 From Kerry Raymond to Wikimedia Australia(Direct Message) : So am I, but it may just be my greater familiarity with it
| |
| 19:53:18 From Kerry Raymond to Wikimedia Australia(Direct Message) : You need to wear a silly hat though!
| |
| 19:54:02 From Kerry Raymond to Wikimedia Australia(Direct Message) : What you might want to do is rename yourself with your real name
| |
| 19:54:17 From Wikimedia Australia to Kerry Raymond(Direct Message) : Yes good idea!
| |
| 19:54:19 From Toby Hudson to Everyone : I haven't used R since 2000, but tonight I've downloaded R and RStudio.... it looks like I've got a long path ahead of me.
| |
| 19:54:39 From SiobhanLeachman to Everyone : Good luck Toby!
| |
| 19:55:17 From SiobhanLeachman to Everyone : Nice to DrThneed is doing some batches :)
| |
| 19:55:22 From SiobhanLeachman to Everyone : *see
| |
| 19:56:10 From Ann Reynolds to Everyone : I noticed DrThneed also

| |
| 20:03:03 From Pru Mitchell to Everyone : Sorry - still back at the book question. Can anyone give me a clue on how to login at https://sourcemd.toolforge.org so I can test the create from ISBN
| |
| 20:05:16 From SiobhanLeachman to Everyone : @Pru - I think the new tool is broken. I’ve only ever used the old tool. And for getting a citation for an ISBN book into wikidata I’d use the Zotero workflow.
| |
| 20:05:23 From David Nind to Everyone : A lot of open access academic articles are finding there way into the Internet Archive's Scholar https://scholar.archive.org/
| |
| 20:05:23 From Pru Mitchell to Everyone : I wonder how many dodgy, made up citations it might find in Wikipedia?
| |
| 20:06:27 From Pru Mitchell to Everyone : Thanks @David! I had heard that about the SourceMD. I am off to check out Zotero workflow after this. I use Zotero all day for my library workflows
| |
| 20:06:36 From SiobhanLeachman to Everyone : @Pru - see this and you can adapt it https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f1/How_to_import_scholarly_articles_to_Wikidata_using_Zotero.webm
| |
| 20:06:49 From David Nind to Everyone : I also use Zotero - add item to Zotero, add any additional data, put into Wikidata using th eplugin
| |
| 20:07:00 From Liam Wyatt to Everyone : @david @amanda - you might want to go to this workshop: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Zotero/Cita#Presentation_workshop
| |
| 20:07:55 From David Nind to Everyone : Thanks Liam!
| |
| 20:08:10 From Pru Mitchell to Everyone : Grey literature is hopeless
| |
| 20:08:42 From Pru Mitchell to Everyone : But I'm happy to clean it up manually if it has more than single purpose.
| |
| 20:10:02 From Pru Mitchell to Everyone : Can WikiCite project fund someone who knows about Zotero templates to fix Zotero?
| |
| 20:11:08 From Amanda Lawrence to Everyone : @Pru that would be great. It's really crazy its so behind.
| |
| 20:11:11 From Pru Mitchell to Everyone : 3am ?
| |
| 20:11:39 From Kerry Raymond to Everyone : Did you say you put something in chat, Liam?
| |
| 20:11:46 From Liam Wyatt to Everyone : https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Zotero/Cita#Presentation_workshop
| |
| 20:13:58 From Sam Wilson to Everyone : I'll keep my head down :)
| |
| 20:14:30 From SiobhanLeachman to Everyone : @Pru I’ve been doing Department of Conservation grey literature and find the workflow from Zotero to Wikidata to Wikipedia that works …ok. Still quite a lot of manual work to do this though.
| |
| 20:14:54 From David Nind to Everyone : Time for the Cita workshop (5am in NZ!) https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?msg=Cita&iso=20210531T1700
| |
| 20:15:11 From SiobhanLeachman to Everyone : Thanks David - doable for NZ!
| |
| 20:16:26 From Pru Mitchell to Everyone : Yes - because SWAN and ESEAP meetings still aren't always good for NZ timezone. Tend to centre on Indonesia
| |
| 20:16:35 From Pru Mitchell to Everyone : as largest affiliate in our region
| |
| 20:17:12 From Kerry Raymond to Everyone : What do we have to do to get notification of SWAN and ESEAP?
| |
| 20:17:49 From Wikimedia Australia to Everyone : We can circulate those details more regularly Kerry!
| |
| 20:19:03 From Pru Mitchell to Everyone : Yes - that is one of the priorities for ESEAP. Making sure we have translators at each meeting
| |
| 20:19:07 From Margaret Donald to Everyone : Brief moment on WLE2021
| |
| 20:19:44 From Wikimedia Australia to Everyone : Wiki Loves Earth: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2021_in_Australia
| |
| 20:20:33 From Kerry Raymond to Everyone : I included NZ in my complaint to CAC. I asked for events that suit UTC +8 through to UTC +12 which I think covers all of AUS and NZ

| |
| 20:21:42 From Ann Reynolds to Everyone : Yes, Kerry. Good job
| |
| 20:22:08 From Pru Mitchell to Everyone : I keep reading that as a perjury tool!

| |
| 20:22:17 From Ann Reynolds to Everyone : Me too
| |
| 20:22:56 From Pru Mitchell to Everyone : Margaret - is that tool just for use by judges?
| |
| 20:24:52 From Kerry Raymond to Everyone : Ich bin ein Berliner
| |
| 20:26:13 From Pru Mitchell to Everyone : Is there a rubric for how many stars?
| |
| 20:26:25 From Kerry Raymond to Everyone : 1 bad, 5 good
| |
| 20:26:26 From Ann Reynolds to Everyone : No, the prejury is for anyone to look before the judges look at a shortlist
| |
| 20:26:39 From Ann Reynolds to Everyone : I saw far many bird pictures today
