Two members of Wikimedia Australia were invited to present at the annual forum of the Analysis & Policy Observatory (APO), held at Engineers Australia, Melbourne office on Thursday 25 October 2018.

Dr Thomas Shafee, editor of WikiJournal of Science, spoke on 'Disseminating Knowledge with Wikipedia-integrated Academic Journals'.

Pru Mitchell presented an overview of Wikidata and Wikipedia, as part of the session on data, platforms and connected knowledge.

This event was part of international Open Access Week, and was held in partnership with Australasian Open Access Strategy Group (AOASG). The theme was 'Redesigning the public knowledge system: New tools and strategies for research, policy and practice'.

The keynote presenter was Dr Howard White of The Campbell Collaboration, who spoke on The Four Waves of the evidence revolution.

Further details of the program are provided in the APO's wrap up blog post.

The invitation to present at the Forum provided a brilliant opportunity for communicating the place of Wikimedia projects in the open access ecosystem amongst a group of influential participants. We are following up a number of connections as a result including:

  • Work in Wikidata to increase the number of Australian researchers and authors
  • Meeting with the head of the Social Data Analytics (SoDA) Lab in the Social Innovation Research Institute, Swinburne University
  • The Campbell Collaboration systematic reviews as a source of citations for #1Lib1Ref
  • Future presentations at related conferences
