Thank you for considering a donation to Wikimedia Australia - we really appreciate your support!

Thank you!

Wikimedia Australia is an independent, not-for-profit organisation and registered charity (ABN: 74 761 792 996) that supports free knowledge across Australia and the Asia-Pacific. You can donate by PayPal, bank transfer or direct deposit, or by cheque or money order - once or as a regular monthly gift.

We run events, develop resources and support contributors across Australia and the Asia-Pacific to create and share free, reliable information on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. Your donation helps us do more of this work. Donations to Wikimedia Australia are not tax deductible (see the FAQ below), but every dollar goes directly to supporting free knowledge in our region. Read more about our activities on our About us page and Projects page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I donate to Wikimedia Australia?

You can donate to Wikimedia Australia by PayPal (using your PayPal balance, a bank account, or a credit card — no PayPal account needed), by direct bank deposit or internet banking transfer to our Westpac account, or by posting a cheque or money order. See Ways to donate above for the details of each method.

Can I set up a regular monthly donation?

Yes. Choose one of the Recurring (monthly) donation amounts in the PayPal section above to set up an ongoing monthly gift. Regular donations help us plan and sustain our programs throughout the year.

Do I need a PayPal account to donate?

No. You can donate by credit or debit card without a PayPal account — click a donation button, then choose "Pay with a Card" or "Checkout as Guest" on the PayPal screen.

Is my donation tax deductible?

Donations to Wikimedia Australia are not tax deductible in Australia, as we do not currently hold Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status. We are, however, an independent registered charity (ABN 74 761 792 996), and every dollar goes directly to supporting free-knowledge projects here in Australia and across the Asia-Pacific rather than to overheads overseas.

What is the difference between donating to Wikimedia Australia and donating to Wikipedia?

Wikipedia is hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF), a separate not-for-profit based in the United States. The donation banners you see on Wikipedia go to the WMF, not to us.

Wikimedia Australia is an independent Australian charity that runs local programs — events, workshops, partnerships and support for contributors around Australia and the Asia-Pacific. Donating to us keeps your contribution working locally.

I donated through a banner on Wikipedia — where did my money go, and how do I change or cancel it?

If you donated through an advertisement or banner on Wikipedia, your donation went to the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) in the United States, the not-for-profit that hosts Wikipedia — not to Wikimedia Australia. You can change or cancel a WMF donation here, or email the Foundation at donate@wikimedia.org.

How do I get a receipt for my donation?

Email us at contact-at-wikimedia.org.au with your contact details and we'll acknowledge your donation. For bank transfers, please also include your name in the payment reference so we can match your gift.

Is Wikimedia Australia a registered charity?

Yes. Wikimedia Australia is an independent, not-for-profit registered charity.
