Announcing Wikimedia Australia’s 10-Year Strategic Plan (2025–2035)

A Message from the President on behalf of the Board and staff of Wikimedia Australia
, Elliott Bledsoe.

The Wikimedia Australia Board are proud to share our new 10 Year Strategic Plan – a forward-looking and ambitious roadmap to guide our work through to 2035.

This plan reflects our commitment to growing and sustaining a thriving Wikimedia movement in Australia – one that is inclusive, resilient, and uniquely Australian. We would like to sincerely thank our members and community for their involvement, feedback and input during the development of this plan. Your ideas and experiences have shaped it in meaningful ways, helping to define the direction the plan took and the priorities in it. It builds on the strengths of our members, community and partnerships, aligning with the global Wikimedia Foundation’s 2030 movement strategy, while also setting our own course for the decade ahead.

Why a 10-Year Plan?

We understand that ten years is a long time, and that many changes, some unforeseen, will occur along the way. However as both an organisation and a movement, we believe it's crucial to have a clear sense of direction that goes beyond a one-, two- or three-year horizon. This plan provides us with that. A long-term strategy is essential to:

  • Think big and act with intention on the future of free knowledge
  • Remain aligned with global Wikimedia goals while prioritising our local and regional needs
  • Maintain continuity in our projects and partnerships, while also building capacity in our membership and organisation
  • Adapt to change, with an annual review cycle that ensures we remain responsive and relevant

This plan is not set in stone. It is a living document. Through regular review and refinement with input from our members, partners and contributors, it will continue to grow.

Our Vision

By 2035, we envision a future where all Australians can freely access, share, enjoy and contribute to knowledge on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia platforms.

Wikimedia Australia will be:

  • A strong and trusted voice for free knowledge locally
  • An engaged and collaborative partner in our region (ESEAP)
  • An active and respected contributor to the global Wikimedia movement

Strategic Pillars

1. Grow Free Knowledge

We will expand awareness and use of Wikimedia platforms across Australia, support contributors, and promote accurate, up-to-date knowledge – especially about Australia.

2. Strive for Knowledge Equity

We are committed to inclusive, respectful and culturally safe participation. We will work to improve access and content for all Australians, especially Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and other underrepresented communities.

3. Build a Stronger Organisation

We will continue to improve our governance, leadership and operations. We will be transparent, accountable and future-focused in everything we do.

4. Celebrate Our Community

Our community is at the heart of everything we do. We will recognise, connect, celebrate and support contributors, and build a shared sense of purpose, pride and belonging.

How Can You Stay Involved?

There are many ways you can engage with us and become involved in the activities we’ll undertake now and throughout this 10-Year Plan:

  • Join the Conversation: Attend community meet-ups, events, workshops, and webinars where we’ll discuss the progress of the Strategic Plan and gather feedback and canvass new ideas.
  • Become a Contributor: Whether you're new to Wikipedia or a seasoned editor, there are always ways to get involved in expanding and improving Australian content.
  • Become a Member: Join Wikimedia Australia to demonstrate your support for the Wikimedia movement and free knowledge, and contribute to the ongoing success of our mission.
  • Support Our Advocacy: Help raise awareness of Wikimedia’s mission and guiding principles in your local community and beyond.
  • Partner With Us: If you’re part of an organisation, consider exploring how we can collaborate to achieve shared goals.
  • Volunteer Your Time: Whether it's mentoring new contributors, organising events, or helping us with digital outreach, your support is invaluable.
  • Stay Informed: Subscribe to our Announce newsletter, follow us on social media, or join our community discussions to keep up with the latest news and opportunities.

As we look to the future, we reaffirm our commitment to:

  • Empowering contributors
  • Advocating for open and equitable access to knowledge
  • Leading with integrity and care
  • Being a good neighbour in our region and a good friend to the global movement.

We are excited about the journey ahead and thank you for being part of it. As we bring this plan to life, we will continue to listen to our community, learn from experience, and adapt to change. Each year, we’ll review our progress, refine our approach, and remain responsive to emerging needs and opportunities.

Our commitment to the long-term vision remains strong: to ensure that all Australians can freely access, share, enjoy, and contribute knowledge to the Wikimedia platforms, for their own fulfilment and for the benefit of all. We look forward to sharing this with you.

Elliott Bledsoe, President WMAU on behalf of the WMAU Board and staff.
