The Impact of Contributing to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Projects

During National Volunteer Week from May 19 to 25, 2025, Wikimedia Australia would like to acknowledge the important contributions of volunteers who support Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects. These individuals dedicate their time and skills to create and improve accessible knowledge for everyone.

Every edit, translation, citation and upload enhances the platform and connects a global community of learners. Volunteering for Wikipedia and on Wikimedia projects encourages community involvement and learning, allowing people to share information easily - and it is easy to do!

As of May 2025, Wikimedia Australia has held 22 editing themed events in the last financial year (with more to come!), where our attendees have edited over 8.06K articles, created 716 articles of their own - all of which has been viewed over 22.1M times!

What these statistics often overlook are the countless hours of dedicated volunteer work involved. Members and volunteers are essential in mentoring new editors, creating comprehensive guides, searching through archives for information and images, and researching topics for these events. Their commitment and effort play a crucial role in our success.

Thank you to all the volunteers for your hard work and commitment, and thank you to everyone who has attended a meet up, editathon or meeting - your contributions improve resources for millions and encourage others to get involved in their communities.

Let’s continue to support a world where knowledge is free and open to all!
