Expression of Interest: Diversity, Inclusion, and Safety Standing Subcommittee
Wikimedia Australia is establishing a Diversity, Inclusion, and Safety Standing Subcommittee, and we're inviting interested community members to be part of it.
We want everyone who takes part in Wikimedia Australia, whether it is at events or online, to feel safe, welcome, and respected. This subcommittee will help us strengthen the work already underway through our Safe Spaces Policy, with the time and focus that this important work deserves.
What the subcommittee will do
Working under the stewardship of a Chair, the subcommittee will take practical steps to support a safer and more inclusive community. This work will include, but isn't limited to:
- developing guiding documents, such as an Inclusive Language Guide and an operational guide for Event Safety,
- identifying suitable training,
- reviewing relevant policies, and
- making recommendations to the Wikimedia Australia Board.
The subcommittee will also take on other related work as needed, and will set its own Terms of Reference outlining how it reports back to the Board.
Who we're looking for
The subcommittee will be made up of board members, a staff member, and up to two community members. You don't need formal qualifications or prior committee experience to take part — we welcome a range of perspectives and lived experience, and we're especially keen to hear from people who care about making our community a safe and inclusive place for everyone.
How to express your interest
To put your hand up, send a short email to staff@wikimedia.org.au by Friday 10 July 2026 telling us:
- your name,
- a few sentences on why you're interested, and
- anything relevant you'd bring to the group (skills, experience, or perspective).
It doesn't need to be long or formal. We just want to hear from you. If you have any questions before applying, you're welcome to reach out to the same address.
