Library and Information Science WikiProject

The Library and Information Science WikiProject identifies and fills gaps in library and information science (LIS)-related content.

A 2024 partner project between Wikimedia Australia, Australian and New Zealand Society of Indexers and Charles Sturt University, School of Information and Communication Studies, the project aims to identify and fill gaps in library and information science (LIS)-related content on Wikimedia platforms.

This project will also establish Mary Coe as the first Wikimedian in Residence at the Australian and New Zealand Society of Indexers (ANZSI). It will provide opportunities for ANZSI members (professional indexers) and CSU SICS (information studies/librarianship) students to develop their skills and confidence in Wiki editing and in the areas of librarianship, information studies, metadata and indexing.

The majority of ANZSI members and CSU SICS students are female, so addressing the gender gap in Wikimedia work will be a secondary benefit of this project.

Outcomes

  • Creation of a new Wikidata Property: indexer, entity responsible for compiling an index of a book, database, website or other forms of media publications in the form of a methodical arrangement of records designed to enable users to locate information quickly. Example: Hazel K. Bell (Q70226489))
  • Wikimedia Australia support of a teacher-librarian student professional placement from Charles Sturt University
