National Communication Museum

Wikimedia Australia has been collaborating with the National Communication Museum (NCM) since mid-2025 to assist museum staff in improving the online visibility of Australian communication topics. Our partnership centres on editing and updating Wikipedia articles related to the museum's collections, and sharing valuable information so it is available to the public.

Connecting with the National Communication Museum

In June 2025, Wikimedia Australia ran an edit-a-thon at one of Melbourne's newest museums, the National Communication Museum, which opened in September 2024. Before the edit-a-thon, we were greeted warmly and given a passionate tour of the collections.

Wikimedia Australia edit-a-thon at the National Communication Museum, Melbourne, June 2025.

At the edit-a-thon we hosted, thirteen staff members and volunteers from the museum spoke extensively about the importance of editing Wikipedia and other Wikimedia platforms in the era of AI. Additionally, unlike at some other edit-a-thons, the attendees were particularly interested in the history of Wikipedia and its role in shaping the internet.

As a group, we explored how easy it was to make a difference and improve the internet one step at a time, and “nerded out together” (their words) by enhancing several articles about communications in Australia.

The edit-a-thon has prompted some team members to explore ways to improve these Wikipedia articles in the long term and utilise them as a means of truth-telling.

Thank you to the NCM for a wonderful afternoon, and we look forward to future events.
