WMAU Community Meeting - 10 November 2021

Congratulations to Ann Reynolds for winning an Edna Ryan Award for community activism for her work on Wiki Write Women

James Gaunt - WMAU's first intern. Made a proposal to work on a project around Australian music. Started with improvements about music and street press. Quite a small number of articles on musicians and bands considering the numbers of bands there must be. Used Australian Music Month as an imputus to made some improvements. A proposal made to the Australia Council which was accepted. Hoping to run four edit-a-thons and other events in various locations, in person if possible. Hoping to secure funding for a year-long Wikimedian partnership like Mike Dickison's role as Wikimedian at Large in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Q from Paige: Any subjects you were shocked didn't have an article? Some other kinds of pages that are missing: the First Fleet piano, Juice Magazine, Kim Ryrie (Fairlight synthesiser co-inventor), Spinifex Gum, and Melbourne Music Week. Want to dig into some archives and Trove to find some resources.

Q: If you can't find resources could that make it difficult to show notability? Going to work on finding and digitising some material at SLV. There will probably been some deletions proposed but we'll deal with them as the arise.

Caddie: Did you know Tamworth Country Music festival doesn't have organisers, it just happens!

Gnangarra - The first ever virtual Wikimania, a wrap Core organising team still processing and auditing the data, so these figures are unofficial. Eventbrite for registrations, Remo for hosting, Pretalx for managing speakers, and Meta-Wiki for scheduling and other documentation. Expecting about 1000 registrations, got about 2500? 2000 people registered on Remo and 1900 people attended for considerable times - could be technical, data or connection issues. 28 people (2%) from Australia/NZ. A lot of people would have watched the live streams or recordings on YouTube without registering. Most people were satisfied, but about 40% had technical issues. About 10% were dissatisfied about the event being online.

New scholarship process run through the affiliates, which encouraged engagement and follow-up with communities and affiliates. A lot of new attendees from Africa and ESEAP, where there would be travel and visa issues with an in-person event.

Every session was recorded, still being uploaded to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikimania_2021_videos Commons is not coping with files over 100Mb, and conversion is proving difficult to compress to that size.

Wikimedia Australia's presentation is at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikimedia_Australia,_Wikimania_2021.webm First video uploaded but is taking hours to convert, render and upload. Q (Toby): The live translation was amazing. Are the translations available even as a raw file? A: Yes, that is the aim and the translations were recorded, but it's tricky to upload and sync the tracks, but Toby is happy to help with that.

Q (Kerry): The platform was great for presentations, but a little difficult to have conversations as at an in-person conference. A: It got better as it went on, but took a while to get the Unconference area working smoothly. The presenters were in Streamyard not Remo so were disconnected from the attendees. Kerry: Time zones was of course a problem. Unconference worked really well and was one of the highlights due to the interaction. Gideon: Timing was very rigid and sessions were cut off if they went over time, might be better to have a quick break. Speakers couldn't see the Remo chat and relied on volunteers transferring questions to the Etherpad. Think there will be an online option in future even if there's a physical event. There will be calls for the Core Organising Team for 2022 - please volunteer although the meetings are at terrible times.

Meet a Wikimedian: Damien Linnane (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Damien_Linnane)

Lives in Newcastle, working as a librarian. Did a job aptitude test, said he would be a great librarian. Doubted it but told the careers advisor he was a keen Wikipedia editor, and that made sense. 59,000 edits since 2008. 16th featured article on prison education - first nominated in 2018 but got knocked back as too big and difficult, but got there in the end. Had some issues uploading a massive image. Created an article (Murder of Leigh Leigh) about the real-life murder Black Rock was based on. Grim and depressing but very proud of the article. Then down the rabbit hole with article about the NSW Court of Appeal, the play the movie was based on, etc.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prison_education https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Leigh_Leigh https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_deaths_from_drug_overdose_and_intoxication

Also does writing and illustration.

Q (Toby): What's your experience of the peer review process?

It can be confronting but always improves the article.

I know the plan was to save and publish those translations. How did that go? Because my talk was about a multilingual tool, I'd love to merge the translations with the video and use it as advertising. 19:28:44 From Kerry Raymond to Everyone: Many people talk about the face-to-face interactions at Wikimania are the most valuable thing about it, but this was hard to achieve with Remo (or so I found). That is not to say it can't be done with an online event but the time zoning is a factor -- with an in-person event you are all in the same time zone 19:29:22 From gnangarra on Whadjuk Nyungar boodjar to Everyone: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikimania_2021_videos 19:30:32 From gnangarra on Whadjuk Nyungar boodjar to Everyone: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikimedia_Australia,_Wikimania_2021.webm 19:40:37 From Toby Hudson to Everyone: Well done anyway to all the organisers. Despite editing for 17 years, I've never been to one before, and it was only possible because of the online format. 19:40:38 From Ann Reynolds to Everyone: I am very much in favour of having an online option 19:40:59 From Butch Bustria to Everyone: Tweaks on a conference best done pilot on a regional conference 19:41:50 From Pru Mitchell to Everyone: We need regional core organising teams 19:42:11 From Kerry Raymond to Everyone: I have to say an on-site event is better (I've been to two) but I appreciate that the online can reach so many more people that online has to continue. 19:43:14 From gnangarra on Whadjuk Nyungar boodjar to Everyone: agree Kerry, nothing beats talking ni person 19:44:16 From Butch Bustria to Everyone: We will see. Only ESEAP and Latin America are the ones hadn't done a conference after 2018 19:48:33 From Ann Reynolds to Everyone: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Leigh_Leigh 19:49:41 From Damien Linnane to Everyone: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_deaths_from_drug_overdose_and_intoxication 19:50:11 From Ann Reynolds to Everyone: Great work! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Damien_Linnane 19:50:30 From Toby Hudson to Everyone: What's your experience of the peer review process? 19:51:52 From Toby Hudson to Everyone: Do you find it useful? Collaborative/confrontational? Do you become a better writer? 19:54:37 From gnangarra on Whadjuk Nyungar boodjar to Everyone: lol, offset by about 45degres show the gravy not the headstone 19:56:04 From Toby Hudson to Everyone: Great way to welcome a new member Caddie... thanks for presenting Damien 19:58:06 From Toby Hudson to Everyone: it's enabled already for me 19:59:34 From James Gaunt to Everyone: Sorry, I have to run off, but it was great to meet you all and thanks for the Wiki tips Toby and Ann. 20:05:27 From Toby Hudson to Everyone: What are the relative sizes of these different funds? 20:07:27 From Jacqueline Chen to Everyone: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Programs/Wikimedia_Community_Fund 20:08:31 From Jacqueline Chen to Everyone: Hi Toby, for rapid grants (up to USD 5k); general support grants (no specific limit); Alliances fund (USD 100K max/grant) 20:09:21 From Toby Hudson to Everyone: Thanks Jacqueline. I was more interested in the overall size of the grant program funds (per year), rather than the individual grants. 20:11:12 From Jacqueline Chen to Everyone: Wikimedia Community Grant (USD 900K for ESEAP); Alliances Fund (USD 700K); Conferences and Events (USD 260K) 20:11:48 From Jacqueline Chen to Everyone: These are just tentative budget numbers and can be adjusted for future years based on regional needs 20:11:59 From Toby Hudson to Everyone: Thanks Jacqueline, that's really helpful to know. 20:12:20 From Toby Hudson to Everyone: (are the latter two also just the ESEAP portions?) 20:13:14 From Jacqueline Chen to Everyone: The latter two (Alliances and Conference) are global allocations 20:14:13 From Butch Bustria to Everyone: ESEAP meeting on Saturday 07:00 UTC : Video call link: https://meet.google.com/eza-ynsx-rrf 20:15:01 From Butch Bustria to Everyone: Feel free to come and share the invite 20:15:13 From Wikimedia Australia to Everyone: Thanks Butch! 20:16:11 From Wikimedia Australia to Everyone: Toby’s presentation is here: https://youtu.be/JXX0dD1H8Tk 20:16:23 From Wikimedia Australia to Everyone: And the others from Open Access Week here: https://oaaustralasia.org/events/oa-week-2021/ 20:16:41 From Toby Hudson to Everyone: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P10000 20:16:49 From Toby Hudson to Everyone: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P10044 20:17:08 From Butch Bustria to Everyone: Meta page link about the next ESEAP meeting: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/ESEAP_Hub/Meetings/13_November_2021 20:17:48 From Toby Hudson to Everyone: 100m (queries per minute) 20:18:01 From Pru Mitchell to Everyone: There is a big infrastructure project with Trove - just starting https://ardc.edu.au/collaborations/strategic-activities/hass-and-indigenous-research-data-commons/project-plans/trove-researcher-platform-for-advanced-research-project-plan/ 20:19:02 From Wikimedia Australia to Everyone: Thomas Shaffee presentation tomorrow: https://www.openpublishingfest.org/calendar.html#event-63/ 20:20:18 From Toby Hudson to Everyone: Here's one I did for my suburb : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epping,_New_South_Wales 20:20:42 From Toby Hudson to Everyone: I don't know how to do a railway though - that sounds interesting. 20:20:43 From Ann Reynolds to Everyone: A map session sounds interesting 20:20:52 From Pru Mitchell to Everyone: It would be worth promoting that as a public session 20:21:10 From Pru Mitchell to Everyone: A grant opportunity for someone:) 20:22:14 From Sam Wilson to Everyone: https://foss4g-perth.org/ 20:23:24 From Toby Hudson to Everyone: ^^ there's no online component Sam? 20:24:23 From Sam Wilson to Everyone: oh, yep there is! https://osgeo-oceania.org/foss4g-sotm-oceania-conference/ 20:27:20 From Toby Hudson to Everyone: great...
