Public Domain Day 2025
Happy New Year and Happy Public Domain Day!
, Ali Smith.
In 2025, works published in the 1920s will enter the public domain in the United States. In Australia, this will include unpublished works by authors who died in 1954, orphan works created in 1954, and government publications from 1974. This transition occurs each year on January 1, in line with the copyright laws of both countries.
Notably, Australian Miles Franklin, known for "My Brilliant Career," will also enter the public domain.
What does this mean for Wikipedia?
Public domain works can be used, reused and adapted freely without permission or restrictions. In the coming days, Wikimedia volunteers globally will be busy on Wikimedia platforms adding content that has recently entered the public domain.
