Did you know only 19% of biographies on Wikipedia are about women and a mere 9% of Wikipedia contributors identify as female? Research has shown Women in STEM are particularly underrepresented compared to their male colleagues.
University of New South Wales and Wikimedia Australia has been partnering since 2019 to hold a student edita-thon to create profiles on Wikipedia highlighting the achievements of women in STEM, to help reduce the bias in content online.
2021's event also featured a Q&A panel featuring Australia's Chief Scientist Dr Cathy Foley, Education Manager at Sydney Quantum Academy Dr Eser Zerenturk, and Researcher for the Centre of Marine Science and Innovation Dr Steph Gardener.
For 2022's event, a Q&A panel was presented with Founder and CEO of the Creative Element Erica Hediger, Australia's Chief Defence Scientist Prof. Tanya Monro, and Westpac Research Fellow and Deputy Director SydneyNano (Academic Development and External Engagement) A/Prof. Alice Motion.
