Wikimedia Australia is delighted to announce our WikiCon 2023 will be held in Brisbane on 18 November 2023! We invite anyone interested in open knowledge and meeting fellow Wikimedians to join us for an exciting program covering all things Wiki. Everyone is welcome, from beginners to experts, as we cover some of the latest developments, tools and projects that our Australian community are undertaking on Wikipedia, Wikidata, WikiCommons, WikiSource and other Wiki platforms.
Flickypedia - seamless CC image sharing from Flickr to WikiCommons
A new partnership between the Flickr Foundation and the Wikimedia Foundation will develop a new software tool for streamlined sharing of CC-licensed images from Flickr to Wikimedia Commons. This collaboration strengthens the visual resources on Wikipedia by harnessing Flickr's vast Creative Commons collection, enriching content for Wikipedia users and editors. The world is at a critical point, requiring urgent action to address climate change, biodiversity loss, and secure a sustainable future. The recent Biodiversity Heritage Library Wikimedia white paper, titled Unifying Biodiversity Knowledge to Support Life on a Sustainable Planet, presents new opportunities for the Biodiversity Heritage Library community to contribute to Wikimedia projects and the semantic web.
Announcing the locations of Wikimania 2025 and 2026
A cradle of history, biodiversity, art and architecture, and a hub for intergovernmental collaboration, technology, and so much more, East Africa is full of possibilities for Wikimedia. Wikimania 2025 will be hosted by a dynamic collaboration of volunteers and affiliates in East Africa. The 2026 Wikimania will be hosted in Paris by Wikimédia France in partnership with WikiFranca, the international association bringing together francophone individuals and groups in the movement.
