Wikimedia Australia supports the mission of the Wikimedia Foundation, to empower and engage people around the world to collect and develop educational content under a free license or in the public domain, and to disseminate it effectively and globally. As a chapter of the Wikimedia Foundation offer our members an official voice in the global Wikimedia community.

Below are some of our submissions and publications we have created to further support our mission.

2023-2024 - First Nations Focus Groups

Wikimedia Australia commissioned focus groups to learn about First Nations' experiences on Wikipedia. This project is lead by Professor Bronwyn Carlson, Head of Department Department of Indigenous Studies, Macquarie University, and is currently underway. An invitation for First Nations editors and users of Wikipedia is available. Findings are planned to be published in 2024.

2023 - Wikimedia Australia and First Nations Metadata: ATSILIRN Protocols for Description and Access

Wikimedia Australia commissioned a discussion paper by Kirsten Thorpe, Nathan Sentance, and Lauren Booker looking at First Nations Metadata, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Protocols for Libraries, Archives and Information Service, and projects supported by Wikimedia Australia. 2022 - Submission to the National Cultural Policy

Wikimedia Australia contributed to the consultation on a new National Cultural Policy for Australia. We addressed five pillars outlined in the submission template below with an emphasis on the role of public interest platforms, digital technologies, skills and training and the need for copyright reform. 2021 - Submission for the Consultation on a draft Online Safety (Basic Online Safety Expectations) Determination 2021

The Wikimedia Foundation commented on the Draft Online Safety (Basic Online Safety Expectations Determination 2021. The response underscores the need to strike a balance between Australia's digital economy participation, community-driven spaces and online safety and privacy. Read our submission here.

Wikimedia Australia submitted a response to the Australian Government's Copyright Amendment (Access Reform) Bill 2021. Read our response here.

2021 - Response to the Proposal for a National Open Access Strategy

When Australia's Chief Scientist Dr Cathy Foley identified open access as a key pillar of her strategic work plan, this was followed by consultation with stakeholders and open access advocates, and Wikimedia Australia delivered a response highlighting six recommendations for a national open access strategy. 2009 - Submission on Australian Digital Future Directions

Following the publication of the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy's paper Australia's Digital Economy: Future Directions, Wikimedia Australia submitted a comment. Read our submission here.
