In 2021, Mapping Diversity was launched. The project used Wikidata to discover key facts about diversity and representation in street names across Europe.

They found 59% of the streets and squares in Paris are named after people. Of those, 8.9% are named after women.

In 2019, Miriam González presented on a similar topic at FOSS4G SotM Oceania. Watch her keynote here.

In Australia, Freo Wiki has a list of streets in Fremantle that have been named after someone or something: https://freo.wiki/Streets

To get such data, each street needs to be in Wikidata. Then each Wikidata entry needs to have the property 'named after'. You also need to know who or what the street was named after, and you should add a reference too.

The database Vic Names has a list of place names and who they were named after. Once all of that data has been added to Wikidata, we can run reports on it.

Because there are so many, we'll just look at Melbourne.

In that data there are just 239 place names with mention of being named after something or someone.
