Wikidata in social science research - Dr Heather Ford, UNSW

Wikidata an important site of study for understanding how knowledge-making activities have become interconnected and subject to new rules and new authorities. This matters because structured data from Wikidata (and other sites) now fuels artificial intelligence applications (particularly search engines) and provides millions of people around the world with answers to questions about the world around them.

Heather Ford is a Senior Lecturer at UNSW researching how platform rules influence the diversity, quality and reach of global public knowledge. Before returning to academia, she worked as the Executive Director of iCommons, co-founded Creative Commons South Africa and acted on the Advisory Board of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Wikipedia and Copyright: New Opportunities - Jessica Coates, Australian Digital Alliance & Australian Libraries Copyright Council

Jessica will look at recent and upcoming changes to Australian copyright law, and what they mean for Wikimedians. Thanks to initiatives like the Fair Copyright campaign, new opportunities are opening up in the public domain, if we can take advantage of them.

Jessica Coates is a copyright expert with nearly 20 years of experience working in Australia and overseas, including as the Global Network Manager of Creative Commons. Jessica currently works as the Executive Officer of the Australian Digital Alliance, which advocates for copyright reform in the public interest.
