February Community Meeting: From tentmaking to pagemaking 2022-02-09 8:00:00 AM 2022-02-09 9:30:00 AM 10 National

Online

For Dr Sam Bowker, creating a Wikipedia on decorative Egyptian tentmaking changed his life. His research for the page led to a series of peer-reviewed publications and exhibitions, and ultimately grew into a project that was recognised by the ARC for research impact in 2018.

This February community meeting, we will hear about his collaborative work with the Historians of Islamic Art Association on initiatives for Wikipedia editing as a teaching strategy that has resulted in new pages, expanded stubs, and improved existing sites for Islamic art. Dr Bowker is the Sub Dean Graduate Studies (Faculty of Arts & Education) and a Senior Lecturer in Art History and Visual Culture at Charles Sturt University.

This presentation will be followed by open discussion from the community. Add anything you wish to discuss to the agenda here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Online/AustralianCommunityMeeting_9_February_2022#Agenda

City of Sydney Library edit-a-thon to increase and improve content relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities

First Nations
First Nations Wikipedia Edit-a-thon 2021-07-10 1:00:00 AM 2021-07-09 4:00:00 PM 10 NSW

Online

Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia, it’s the 6th most visited website on the internet. Wikipedia content is created and edited worldwide by volunteer contributors.

It has long been acknowledged that there is a lack of diversity among contributors.

People are meeting up across the world to help remedy the imbalance and bias in the diversity of voices on Wikipedia. The City of Sydney Library has joined this movement, hosting edit-a-thons to increase and improve content relevant to our diverse communities.

Everyone is welcome to join our online edit-a-thon. It will be led by Kirsten Thorpe, Nathan “Mudyi” Sentance, and experienced Wikipedia editors Toby Hudson and Caddie Brain. Kirsten’s professional and research interests relate to Indigenous self-determination in libraries and archives. Nathan works to ensure that the cultural and historical narratives conveyed by memory institutions are being told and controlled by First Nations people. With their help, participants will focus on improving articles of importance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities on Wikipedia.

No experience is necessary to join the edit-a-thon. Bring your own laptop or tablet and connect to our free wi-fi or use one of our devices. (A limited number of library devices will be available for use at the event).

Participants are encouraged to set up a Wikipedia account prior to the workshop.

It's back!! We are thrilled to announce that our second Franklin Women Edit-a-thon will be held on Thursday 7th April 2022.

Register here!

Did you know that there is a serious gender bias on Wikipedia, one of the world’s most-visited websites? Only 19% of the people profiled on Wikipedia are women. This means that many talented women (and their work) are not getting the recognition they deserve, as well as critically skewing perceptions about the contributions that women make to society.

Wikipedia Edit-a-thons are a wonderful (and fun!) way to combat this bias and make the internet just that little bit better.

Franklin Women is excited to be hosting a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon on World Health Day, Thursday 7th April, to increase the online representation of women working in health and medical research.

You don’t need any experience to participate as we will provide all the training you need and several experienced Wikipedians will be there to help you on the day. Editing Wikipedia might sound daunting but the platform is designed so that anyone can contribute, and you can do this in many different ways – from improving the quality of existing articles to adding a whole new page, it all makes a difference!

Mythbusting Wikipedia: Misinformation, AI, and Volunteers 2023-08-01 3:00:00 AM 2023-08-01 4:00:00 AM 10 National

Online

Wikipedia is a free encyclopaedia, edited by volunteers from around the world. In this session you’ll learn how reliable Wikipedia is, how it’s being used in classrooms, and how it can help people understand referencing, misinformation, and the need for reliable sources. Information from Wikipedia is used by search engines like Google, and AI chatbots like Chat GPT, and you’ll see how easy it is to edit Wikipedia yourself to make sure this information remains correct.

This event is being hosted by ALIA, and is open to ALIA Members and Non-members. Registrations can be made on at the ALIA website.

This event will be held online on Zoom.

New advances for Wikipedia integrated academic journals 2021-11-10 11:00:00 PM 2021-11-11 12:00:00 AM 11 International

https://latrobe.zoom.us/s/389296952

The relationship between Wikipedia and academic publishing is changing. In particular, WikiJournals are bringing together the scholarly rigour of academic publishing with the massive impact of Wikipedia and Wikidata. Participating journals publish a range of formats: from broad reviews copied fully into Wikipedia, to image galleries that get integrated throughout the encyclopedia, to stand-alone research and teaching articles.

What does this look like to an Academic? We're used to even top academic articles getting <10,000 views ever, whereas a Wikipedia article on the same topic can get that many each day. Getting both a peer reviewed, citable journal article, that's also integrated into Wikipedia to reach broader demographics like students, journalists and policymakers merges the best of both worlds.

What does this look like to a librarian? It's an interesting way to match quality assurance. It's also unusual to see journals that are free to both reader and author ('Diamond OA'). Article metadata is also integrated Wikidata - an exciting meta-database that's flexible, human- and machine-readable, and multilingual.

What does this look like to a Wikipedian? It's an effective was of drawing in subject-experts who would otherwise not have contributed to a Wikimedia project as authors, peer reviewers and editors. It's a way to generate new high-quality content as well as thoroughly audit existing content.

For those who came to last year's session (https://doi.org/10.26181/5ED388168AE4B) this seminar will cover new ground and avoid repetition, but for those who didn't, we'll still be introducing the necessary background. We'll look at new experiments in format, statistics on impacts so far, and what lessons can be applied to pother projects.

Open Access Week 2021 2021-10-25 1:00:00 AM 2021-10-29 6:00:00 AM 11 National

Online

Wikimedia Australia is a member of Open Access Australasia and excited to be sharing in this year's Open Access Week events on the theme 'It Matters How We Open Knowledge: Building Structural Equity'. In keeping with the theme of Building Structural Equity we will be looking at, using open science to combat global challenges, openness through a First Nations lens, the benefits and barriers to OERs, what open means for different disciplines, accessibility, and non-technical communication, as well as hacking OA, shaking up research assessment and how different parts of the open knowledge ecosystem interacts.

Events will be held via Zoom each day to suit time zones from Australia’s west to New Zealand’s east.

Register for the events and you can save Open Access Australasia’s official Zoom backgrounds to use for the events.

Wikimedia Australia is a member of Open Access Australasia and excited to be sharing in this year's Open Access Week events on the theme 'Open for climate justice'. Events will be held online, and include a panel on Wikimedia collaborations for climate research knowledge sharing.

Beginning Tuesday 25 October, and running until Friday 28. This year's Open Access Week will end with a special discussion titled 'Wikimedia collaborations for climate research knowledge sharing'.

Wikipedia, Wikidata and other Wikimedia platforms are a major source of open knowledge on climate change and environmental issues. The accuracy of this information is therefore highly impactful. Join us for a discussion of how teamwork self-organises within these projects and how research and outreach collaborations are formed with the the broader knowledge ecosystem.

Regional Hubs Conversation 2022-03-23 7:00:00 AM 2022-03-23 8:00:00 AM 11 International

Online

This Global Conversations event will bring Wikimedians together to discuss the findings from the Hubs Dialogue: a series of conversations facilitated by the Movement Strategy and Governance team designed to answer the question: What are the generally shared and context-specific needs among the Wikimedians exploring the hub concept?

Hubs is a name for organizational units in the Wikimedia movement supporting more than one volunteer community. They are one of the initiatives from Movement Strategy recommendations. The idea of Hubs responds to the desire to share power, moving more decision-making closer to the communities involved. They are also expected to bring greater efficiency when working within a region or a theme, compared to the current model centralized in the Wikimedia Foundation.

The aim of this conversation is to share the findings of the Dialogue with the Movement, ensure that they reflect Wikimedians’ lived experiences, and from this shared understanding, start discussing how the findings can be integrated into the Movement Charter drafting process.

What do we expect from participants? We will share the findings of the conversations held with groups that are working on establishing a Hub in their context and we would like participants to listen in, understand, and reflect on these findings.

Representation and erasure: new directions for Wikimedia in Australia 2021-08-16 7:00:00 AM 2021-08-16 8:30:00 AM 10 International

Representation and erasure: opportunities and risks that Wikipedia presents for First Nations knowledges - Kirsten Thorpe and Nathan “Mudyi” Sentance

It has long been acknowledged that Wikipedia has a diversity problem, among its editors and the content they write. People are meeting up across the world to help remedy this imbalance and bias. These efforts often reveal significant tensions between Wikipedia's principles and other knowledge systems, like those of First Nations people around the world. Kirsten Thorpe, a Worimi researcher from the Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education & Research at the University of Technology Sydney, will join Nathan “Mudyi” Sentance, a Wiradjuri activist, librarian and essayist currently working at the Australian Museum, in a conversation about the opportunities and risks that Wikipedia presents for First Nations people.

Bringing Australian Archaeology From Fringe to Centre - Leia Corrie, Emilie Dotte-Saurot , Emily Grey, Sven Ouzman, and the UWA Archaeology Wiki Collective

Archaeology studies all of human history in all of its aspects and is fascinating to many people. Unfortunately, Archaeology also has a 'lunatic fringe' that promote unreliable and false information. The nature of a wiki means such views are easily disseminated. Recent work between UWA Archaeology and Wikimedia Australia has focused on correcting racist, sexist, and misleading archaeological entries. We are also identifying gaps - such as the role of female and BIPOC archaeologists. Finally, 2021 changes to the Australian school curriculum means there is a shortage of reliable archaeological information for both teachers and learners, which we will address by constructing our entries as lesson plans.

Who do we think we are? - Kelly Tall

What is the relationship between Wikipedia and the Order of Australia recipients? Who is represented and who isn’t?

In February 2021, researchers Heather Ford, Tamson Pietsch and Kelly Tall from UTS School of Communication published the results of a pilot study entitled: Producing distinction: Wikipedia and the Order of Australia. A visual essay.

The study was inspired by the work of Women in Red and the Australian Honour a Woman project which was founded in 2017 to improve gender equity by supporting nominations of women for the Order of Australia awards, highlighting structural barriers to inclusion. The Order of Australia is notorious for not recognising women at the same rate as men, but the researchers discovered that on Wikipedia, awardees at the Companions or Officer level (the highest Order awards) are represented in slightly higher numbers than men.

Thoughts on running Wiki Loves Earth in Australia - Margaret Donald

We attracted 182 entrants, 162 of whom were new to Wikipedia, and 1510 photographs were submitted with approximately 20% being ineligible for the competition. (The ineligibility rate remains a major concern.) Participants were encouraged to upload photos taken in previous years. Hence many competitors contributed photos illustrating multiple states and territories. Uploading photos is among the more difficult tasks in Wikipedia and the apparent requirement to categorise images and use "depicts" statements is an unrealistic task for most people. Thus a huge amount of "back room" work needed to be done by experienced Wikimedians to allow good photographs their chance to shine. Many worthwhile images were uploaded, with 138 so far having been used on 289 pages on 32 wikis, with 42,829 file views in June 2021.This talk aims to illustrate and discuss our successes and failures, and suggest ways forward.

A presentation for galleries, libraries, archives, museums, and other knowledge institutions who want to engage with the global Wikimedia movement. We will go through practical steps your organisation can take right away to work with the hundreds of thousands of volunteers creating content on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata. Attendees will take away a guide to copyright and licensing including sample copyright statements, boilerplate text for arranging a copyright release, and a sample author release form.

This talk is especially suitable for small organisations without a dedicated copyright officer or extra resources for engaging a Wikipedian in Residence.

If you are attending this session as part of professional development, please contact Wikimedia Australia following the event to be provided with a certificate of participation.

Contents of this talk:

Collection photos that are actually usable • creating a copyright and licensing policy and putting it on the website • why you should set up an external photostream • "reliable sources" and how to create your own • photographing your institution inside and out • photographing your people and the living treasures of your community • arranging open licenses for local publications and hosting PDFs on your website • engaging with the Wikimedia community • possible Wikimedia projects

The Power & Privilege of Editing Wikipedia 2021-12-08 10:00:00 PM 2021-12-08 11:00:00 PM 11 National

AAANZ Conference 2021, Online

For maximum impact across our research and cultural practices, we should collaborate with our colleagues and students to edit Wikipedia and actively contribute to other open-source online resources. Wikipedia is the world’s leading platform for accessible commentary on history, art and visual culture. It is continuously undergoing revision, yet we are in the best position to lead these changes – especially for aspects of art history and visual culture from Australia and Aotearoa / New Zealand. Developing assessment items in which students identify, research, edit and ethically enhance Wikipedia instills the values of public scholarship and critically engages with pressing issues. This is an important space for inclusion and decolonization, where new voices can contribute to global discourse. Building on the legacy of collaborative Wikipedia Edit-a-thons, Trove APIs, Facebook, and the work of the #KnowMyName initiative and the Historians of Islamic Art Association (HIAA), this panel considers the impact of contributions to online open-source resources. How might your work be better represented in these spaces, and what can we do to measure or improve the impact of our online representation on continuously changing platforms?

Know My Name and Wikimedia Australia: A case study

In 2019 the National Gallery of Australia established an ongoing partnership with Wikimedia Australia in association with the Gallery’s gender equity initiative Know My Name. The partnership aims to address the under-representation of Australian women artists on Wikipedia as part of the Gallery’s strategy to increase understanding of the contributions of women and gender diverse artists. To date the partnership has included two Know My Name Wikipedia Edit-a-thons, volunteer training workshops, the establishment of the National Gallery Volunteer Wiki Club and staff information and training sessions. The Know My Name project has so far resulted in 200,000+ words being added to Wikipedia including the creation of 115 new pages on Australia women artists, 431 existing articles being edited, and 2,320 new references added. 176 volunteer editors have so far participated nationally and new and edited articles have been viewed 513,000+ times on Wikipedia. The partnership has made an internationally significant contribution as part of gender equity movements Art+Feminism and Women in Red. It also offers a best practice case study about how GLAM sector organisations can use collections and expertise to grow representation, inclusion and equity on the world’s biggest online knowledge platforms.

The Record: How culturally diverse communities are using Wikipedia 2023-02-09 8:30:00 AM 2023-02-09 10:00:00 AM 11 National

Zoom

Wikimedia Australia is proud to host this evening of presentations on how Wikipedia and sister projects like Wikimedia Commons are being used by culturally diverse communities from Australia and around the world.

Wikipedia is the 6th most popular website in Australia. When you search something online Wikipedia is often one of the top results. But who are the volunteers contributing to Wikipedia, and what are the difficulties they face as they try to share their cultural knowledge?

This session hopes to bring up some of these questions, and answer them by providing examples of the amazing work currently being done by so many volunteers. The Record: How culturally diverse communities are using Wikipedia will be moderated by Rhianna Patrick and will feature a presentation from Steve Bunbadgee Hodder Watt. Further presenters will be announced soon.

About our presenters

Rhianna Patrick is a Torres Strait Islander freelance journalist, broadcaster and audio content creator.

Steve Bunbadgee Hodder Watt is a Lardil man from Gununa (Mornington Island) is Digitisation Coordinator for First Nations Media Australia, and has worked predominantly in First Nations media for over 20 years.

As a digital platform, Wikimedia projects play a powerful role in the information and media ecosystem, from providing breaking news coverage to data points in Google infoboxes. Wikimedia projects include various types of automation and contribute to the automation of information provided by other platforms and are also being impacted by the regulations attempting to control big tech. There are therefore many areas of overlap with ADM+S areas of interest which could provide a range of fascinating research projects or collaborations which this workshop hopes to foster.

Join us for a lunchtime seminar/workshop on researching Wikimedia as a Digital Platform. The session will include lightning talks of 5-10 minutes on current or future research projects, questions, ideas or issues followed by open discussion and input from colleagues and for developing new proposals or collaborations. Speakers may share a paper or concept at various stages of gestation.

Lunch will be provided.

This event is being hosted as a 2023 ADM+S Symposium Satellite event.

If you would like to provide a 5 minute lightning talk please email amanda.lawrence@rmit.edu.au with your name, organisation and a title by Monday 15 May 2023. Please indicate if you will participate in person (preferred) or online.

Speakers

The Australian Women in Religion Project is a collaborative initiative of the University of Divinity. The University is taking a lead role in coordinating an Australian contribution to the wider 1000 Women in Religion Project. This international project is a major initiative of the Women's Caucus of the American Academy of Religion and Society of Biblical Literature and is supported by Atla (Collectors and Connectors in Religion and Theology) and the Women's Task Force of the Parliament of World Religions. The Project aims to raise up the unrecognised work of important women in religion and to help address the gender bias on platforms like Wikipedia. Only about 18% of biographical articles on Wikipedia are about women.

The University of Divinity project group has compiled a list of approximately 500 Women in Religion from both Australia and New Zealand and a Bibliography of Authoritative Sources that can be used when creating new Wikipedia pages (see below). These documents will be updated as the project progresses.

The WikiProject 1000 Women in Religion Project Page includes a list of women that is generated automatically from Wikidata. The list now includes women from Australian or New Zealand that are included in the 1000 Women in Religion Project. The list shows women with existing Wikipedia articles in English (blue) and those with Wikipedia articles still to-be-created (red). As the project progresses the links will change from red to blue.

The 1000 Women in Religion page also includes information about related project events and activities.

The University of Divinity's initial target is to create 100 new Wikipedia entries for Australian Women in Religion.

Join the Women in Religion crew as they kick of their Wiki-Week Editing Extravaganza for International Women's Day.

Led by Kerrie Burn of the University of Divinity, the Australian Women in Religion Project team has been tirelessly collecting, sorting and uploading data, as well as editing and creating articles about Australian women. This is also the Australian contribution to the wider 1000 Women in Religion Project which aims to raise up the unrecognised work of important women in religion and to help address the gender bias on platforms like Wikipedia. Still today, only about 18% of biographical articles on Wikipedia are about women.

During the Wiki-Week Editing Extravaganza we will focus on 3 groups of women:

  • Women included on the Australian Dictionary of Biography without a Wikipedia page
  • Women associated with the Movement for the Ordination of Women
  • Women associated with the Women-Church journal

Lists of relevant subjects and associated resources will be provided prior to event, including suggested articles for creation and Wikipedia stub articles that require improvement.

As we look ahead to the edit-a-thon(s) you might like to take a look at the Wikipedia Article Guide and the AWR List available on this page. Please give some thought to women that you might like to write about. There are 576 women currently listed, with those shaded in blue already having a Wikipedia page.

WikiCite: what exactly is it, how can I contribute and how could it change my editing?

WikiCite is a community of projects (and people, and events) working to build the corpus in Wikidata through ‘open citations’ of publications, and in particular, scholarly journal articles, that can then be used across Wikimedia platforms. Funded by the Sloan Foundation, it is now among the most popular projects in Wikidata.

For this month's community meeting, WikiCite’s Program Manager Liam Wyatt will be joining us online from Italy as well as Australian Wikipedian Margaret Donald, who will demonstrate how she uses WikiCite in both visual and source editor, with an occasional foray into Wikidata. Then Wikimedia Australia President Alex Lum will preview WikidataR, a package (software extension) for the R programming language.

The WikidataCon is an event focused on the Wikidata community in a broad sense: editors, tools builders, but also 3rd party reusers, partner organizations that are using or contributing to the data, the ecosystem of organizations working with Wikibase. The content of the conference will have some parts dedicated to people who want to learn more about Wikidata, some workshops and discussions for the community to share skills and exchange about their practices, and some space left to include side events for specific projects (WikiCite, Wikibase, GLAM, etc.).

Panellists are Mike Dickison, Dr Andrew Leung, Alex Stinson, and Siobhan Leachman, chaired by Dr Thomas Shafee.

This event is part of Open Access Week 2022. See the full program one the Open Access Week 2022 Program Page

This event has ended. Watch a recording here.

This year’s Open Access week theme seeks to encourage connection and collaboration among the climate movement and the international open community. Open Access Australasia recognises the Awabakal, Turrbal and Yugara, and Bedegal as the First Nations owners of the lands where we work.

We invite you to join us as “Record Correctors”, scholars, musicians, journalists, archivists and passionate fans all working to ensure that Australian popular music is given due representation in the world’s biggest online and open access research resource. Our emphasis is on minority/traditionally underrepresented groups in particular, as well as ensuring current entries of importance are given contemporary context.

The day will include formal instruction and explanation by Wikimedia Australia experts Belinda Spry and James Gaunt, where we learn practical ways to correct existing Wikipedia content and ultimately add to the richness and reliability of the outlet as a source of current and historical information about Australian popular music.

As well as the Wiki workshops, we will also spend some time considering how we might go forward as “Record Correctors” - considering who and what to target next and how to go about this.

On January 15, 2001, Wikipedia was established and first edited! This year Wikipedia Day is an occasion to celebrate Wikipedia's 23rd birthday.

Let's gather around the table and share a birthday morning tea and slice of birthday cake together - tag us with a photo of your morning tea on social media and use the hashtag #wikipediaday2024, or upload to Wikimedia Commons.

We'd also love to hear your thoughts about what you achieved on Wikipedia in 2023, and what you'll be working on in 2024.

Let's celebrate Wikipedia Day!

An edit-a-thon (alternatively spelled "editathon") is one or more events in which people work together in person or online to build content on a wiki. During this session, you will have the opportunity to add your own references to pages, all while having an expert Wiki Editor on hand to answer your questions.

Edit-a-thons improve the encyclopedia and can be a great way to help new Wikipedians learn to edit. As part of Library and Information Week – ‘Where’s the Source?’, the Campbelltown Public Library is partnering with Wikimedia, to conduct a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon.

In this 2-hour session, you will be shown the basics of Wikipedia and how to make edits to Wikipedia pages. Join us for an interactive workshop where you can learn to edit and make new entries to Wikipedia. You will have the opportunity to add your own references to pages, all while having an expert Wiki Editor on hand to answer all your questions.

Wikipedia Edit-a-thon for women in health and medical research 2019-07-25 3:30:00 AM 2019-07-25 7:00:00 AM 10 NSW

Sydney

Would you believe that the 5th most visited website in the world, Wikipedia, has a serious gender bias? Only 17% of the people profiled on Wikipedia are women. Not only does this mean that many talented women (and their work) are not getting the recognition they deserve, but it also critically skews perceptions about the contributions that women make to many different endeavours. This is no doubt influenced by the fact that only 8-16% of the people who actively contribute content to Wikipedia identify as women.

Join Franklin Women on Thursday 25th July (the birthday of our namesake, Rosalind Franklin) to make the internet just that little bit better. Together we can increase the visibility on Wikipedia of women who have made important contributions to the health and medical research sector, as well as increase the number of women who have the skills to become Wikipedia editors.

Editing Wikipedia might sound daunting but the platform is designed so that anyone can contribute, and you can do this in many different ways – from improving the quality of existing articles to adding a whole new page. To help you on the day, we will start the afternoon with a tutorial and there will be several experienced Wikimedians there for when you start editing. After the session we will be celebrating our edits over canapés and drinks – we hope you can stay!
